    Crossover Tobaccos: Aro to Va

Oh, I'm not suggesting anyone should transition to Va's. I'm just saying that if one was interested and wanted a smooth transition there are tobaccos that are good for the cross-over. Kind of like how many suggest the Frog Morton series as a cross-over blend from aromatics to English's...

    Crossover Tobaccos: Aro to Va

Every now and then I'll find a tobacco that leaves me thinking of how well it would be as a transition for newer pipe smokers from aromatics to Virginias. I see this question asked on forums from time to time so I thought I'd start a thread where some of the more experienced pipe smokers can...

    Stem Construction

Another one that makes his own acrylic stems is Maigur Knets. Did you guys see the stems on the pipes he took to the Chicago Show this year? They were magnificent. I spoke with him for some time about them. He cast pinecones in the middle of some of them and the effect was amazing. He told...

    Great Quotes

One of my all-time favorites is: "Life is hard. It's even harder when you're stupid." -- John Wayne

    Classic Movies

Ahhh. I do love old movies. I'm a big Jimmy Stewart fan. "Anatomy of a Murder" is a really good one. Some of my other favorites are Brando in "On The Waterfront" and James Cagney in "Angels with Dirty Faces." I agree; there are just too many good ones to mention them all.

What did You do Today When Smoking Your Pipe?

Listening to blues and making pipes.

    Blues Man

I'm a huge blues fan. I prefer Mississippi Delta Blues. I love the raw grittiness of it. Some of my favorites are Robert Johnson, Son House, Honeyboy Edwards, Charlie Patton, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Peetie Wheatstraw. I listen to blues most of the time in my workshop while making pipes.

    Too Nice to Smoke?

Awesome snag. I say smoke it. Think of it this way: even if you do destroy it which is unlikely, you're only out $40 really.

    Images of a Forgotten America

I really enjoy pictures like these. I don't find them depressing at all. I think they are amazingly beautiful. Decay is a part of the circle of life. I find it fascinating how relatively quick nature reclaims the land and resources we borrow. Thanks for sharing.

    Why Do You Smoke ?

The number one reason for me is because not very many people do it. I've always preferred the "road less traveled." I'm also fairly nostalgic and maybe a touch eccentric in my tastes and preferences.

Enjoying Some Semois at the Moment

It is the same stuff, Spartan. It came in a loosely wrapped gold brick. My experience with this tobacco was very similar to Ben's. I think it would add a nice dimension to a tobacco like 5100 though. I figure I'll experiment with it a bit.

Grain Alcohol or 99% Isopropyl for Retort Cleaning?

Either is fine to use and work equally well. Everclear/grain alcohol is food grade so some prefer it.

Chicago Pipe Show Pix (part 3)

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. And, thanks for sharing photos of my work, JJ. We've had several long conversations but never about what I do at my "real" job. We usually talk pipes which is much more interesting. I'm actually a Registered Nurse by trade and have worked as a hospital...

Covering Bowl With Fingers While Drawing.

I do this too to get a dying ember to reignite. I don't know why it works but it does a lot of the time. Interestingly, in The Hobbit, it appears that Bilbo is towards the end of his pipe when he does it as if he's trying to get every last bit of tobacco. That seems to be when the technique...

    Pronounce Ser Jacopo

I did a little research and found that the letter J isn't used in the Italian language so when it appears the word is typically of a foreign origin. Jacopo is apparently a Jewish variant of Jacob. Ser appears to mean TO BE as in the essence of. It makes sense that the J in this case is...

Chicago Show - A Nice Story

Now that I think about it; I should have held it for ransom and mailed him ransom notes. That would have been fun.

Chicago Show - A Nice Story

bigvan left his famous beach chair pipe rest on the table Thursday evening. I tried to sell it back to him the next day.
