I suffered the bite and general rough mouth when I started back in Feb. Getting a Peterson P-Lip with 9mm filter was a total game changer for me. Even if you dry the tobacco, you won't believe how moist the filter is when you remove it after a smoke. Weighing it before and after, I routinely...
Last night's smokes started with in GH Dark Virginia Cavendish in the Peterson 303. This is a real sleeper in the VA world. Very rich and fruity. My experiments bending this with a dash of black Cavendish and about 20% Latakia have been very smooth and tasty.
Next up was PS English Luxury in...
90 minute bowl of Ennerdale in a Peterson 303. So delicious. I didn't think it would ever stop smoking. Amazing to have such a long smoke and be left with such a clean palate.
About to light a bowl of 2016 Kendal Toffee in the Petey 313.
Out on the patio, smoking some PS Luxury Navy Flake in my Rattray's Dark Ale poker, eagerly awaiting delivery of a package from @drrock with my first ever McClelland purchase, a 100g tub of very well-aged Dominican Glory Maduro.
GH Flake EVOLUTION:
Last night, I snipped some Rum Flake into 3/8" - 1/2" pieces, then dropped it into the bud/spice grinder and gave it two or three quick turns. The grinder puled the flakes into a lovely short ribbon which I dried for 30 minutes and then gravity filled into my Peterson 303...
The MM standard filter stems are too tight. What you want is the Danish Bit they sell. Much better, more comfortable, holds a rubber pipe bit and fits a filter perfectly. It comes standard on a few models, but most are the bad kind.
If you like John Marr, I would highly rec you try an oz of Peter Stokkebye PS1 Classic Natural. It's a lightly cavendished VA with a touch of burley and a lovely but light aromatic topping. It's quickly become a real favorite.
Also, PS301 Natural Dutch Cavendish which is the same VA without any...
I am a committed filter smoker, mostly 9mm. Every time I see the filter stained with tar after a bowl I'm really glad I use them. And they are great at absorbing steam, too. I don't think I could smoke pipes without them.
I find that the less dark-fired, perique or heavy alkaline burley components, the better it is for my mote. Really getting into straight and lightly-condimented VAs now. Far easier on the soft tissues.
I recently bought my first poker, a Rattray's 9mm Dark Ale, and wow do I love this pipe.
The MM Hardwood Poker under $20 looks like a great option, comes with the Danish Bit and you can use a filter, too. In fact, I just add that one to my cart! :-)
Similar experience, I loved those big Nicaraguan toros that were 100% fire and pepper and the ultra-hopped IPAs. As I crossed the 50-year mark, suddenly none of that tasted very good to me anymore. So I've been moving towards the lighter end of the spectrum and finding so much more flavor and...
I'm fairly new to Virginias myself but really starting to enjoy them, esp as so many dark-fired and perique blends just burn out my palate after 1/2 bowl.
PS Luxury Twist Flake may seem plebeian to some, but it has really been a winner for me. Lighter but not dull, still flavorful and sweet...
Last night I enjoyed some PS Luxury Twist Flake in my Peterson Dublin Filter 05, which is a match made in heaven.
Followed by GH Brown Twist in the Peterson 313. I prefer this blend in the 303.
The MM Danish stems for $2 each (standard with the Diplomat and Hardwood Poker) are a huge upgrade from the regular cheap plastic ones. They fit a rubber bit perfectly. Cobbs are fun and smoke great but not sexy enough for me to worry about having a fancy acrylic stem that doubles the price, esp...
