Trying Out Gawith Blends and Sharing My Impressions

Kendal Flake is really one of the best in the GH medium range. It's got a lovely topping over a smooth VA with just a little dark leaf to get it turned up a notch but not so much that it becomes overpowering. I like this much better than Brown Flake Aromatic, which has a bit too much dark fired...

    All Day Tobacco

Peter Stokkebye PS1 Natural and PS301 Natural Dutch Cavendish are easy to grab and smoke any time. I go through a lot of these. The PS1 has a lightly cavendished VA with a very smooth and light topping. PS301 has that same cavendished VA without any topping and a decent pinch of light burley...

    First Attempt - Dismal Failure!

Bad (or uncured, not broken in) briar can give you some intensely bitter and acrid puffs. Black cavendish is your friend here, just smoke a bunch of bowls that are overly sweet until that pipe settles down. You may want to add a filtered cobb for comparison.

    First Attempt - Dismal Failure!

I am into my ninth month of pipe smoking and am just now learning to smoke so the bowl stays lit, and I've probably smoked close to 200 bowls so far.

    Ten Minute Tiny Pipes

What is the body of the pipe made of? Do you use the filter stones with this? EDIT: Wow, this is an ingenious design, like a mini Calabash with a huge filter. I bet you could use plain rice in the spiral. Gonna have to try one of these!

    Bob’s Chocolate Flake

Wow, just busted out the BCF and had a delicious smoke in my Amadeus bent billiard from Greece. Every Gawith Hoggarth blend is my favorite when I'm smoking it.

    Bob’s Chocolate Flake

Try cutting the flakes into 1/2" to 3/8" pieces and then rubbing out and few minutes to dry. You end up with a ribbon cut that still has some little chunklets. Last weekend, I smoked some Bosun Cut Plug prepped this way and the Peterson 303 bowl lasted over 90 minutes, just pouring out delicious...

    Pipe "Break In"

I started using the Peterson Bowl Coating (discussed here at Peterson Pipe Notes) and have found it to be very useful and effective. My first Pete was an estate 303 that hit me with some really acrid puffs for a while. After a dozen bowls where I was wincing my way through the smoke, I saw the...

    Favourite Corn Cob?

Yes, the Danish is so much better. Don't know why they aren't available at SmokingPipes. Super cheap and terrific upgrade. Unlike the standard stem, they hold a rubber bit perfectly.

    Filters and/or Adapters...or Not?

I have a little gram scale and got to weighing my 9mm filters before and after a smoke. It's generally about 1/4g increase, which you can imagine is mostly water. Even with dry tobacco the filter will come out quite damp. Even if tobacco feels pretty crispy, it's probably 50+% humidity. The...

    Filters and/or Adapters...or Not?

I have several Peterson Army Mount System pipes with both filtered and unfiltered stems, all of which are interchangeable. So I have spent some time experimenting with swapping mid-bowl and I feel like the filter just gives you that extra bit of steam reduction that makes it better for me. Can't...

    Cob Vs. Hardwood Vs. Clay

Make your next purchase a MM Diplomat Cob, which is a great smoker with thick walls, takes a 6mm filter and has the improved Danish bit, a big upgrade over the standard bit that comes with the Country Gent. I highly rec using a filter as it will help mitigate tongue bite, a very common problem...

***What Are You Smoking, November 2023?***

I'm kicking myself for not buying at least a basket pipe when I was at JJ Fox in Sept.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2023?***

SmokingPipes listed a Gigi Classica Rusticated Bent Billiard earlier today which I added to my cart, then gave myself a PAD timeout for a few hours, in which it promptly sold.

***What Are You Smoking, November 2023?***

GLP Embarcadero in the Petey 303... oh yeah. Virginia has really grown on me. We need to see more of each other. Followed by a bowl of MacBaren Mixture Scottish, which has smoothed out considerably with just a few weeks in the jar. Could almost use a dash of DFK but really an easygoing...

    JJ Fox, London. Tuesday 21November.

Lovely shop, I was there in Sept and bought some Germain's bulk, Brown Flake and Plum Cake. Wish I had the time to sit and smoke for a while but it was our only day in London and the weather was perfect. Enjoy!

    Cornell & Diehl: Decanting

Nightcap didn't hit me well out of the gate. The perique was super peppery like a Nicaraguan cigar, something I was moving away from. Someone here said to dump it in a jar, give it a few shakes, then leave it for a few months with a quick shake once a week. WOW! What a difference that made! I...
