Trying Out Gawith Blends and Sharing My Impressions

#7 Broken Flake and Bosun Cut Plug are the two most heavily perfumed of the dozen or so GH blends I have tried. BCP was like smoking a rose, utterly intoxicating. The GH toppings all taste so pure and delicious, there is nothing synthetic or artificial about them.

Just How Dry Should It Be?

One thing to note is that tobacco can feel quite crispy to the touch but still have a decent amount of moisture. Back when I gave a thought to Cuban cigars, which are often way too tight, I dry boxed them at 50% for a few months before smoking. And they smoked perfectly fine. I was gifted a...

Tobaccos that Won't Bite your Tongue...At All!

Honestly, I have realized that VAs are much kinder to me than burleys. One of my favorite all day smokers is PS Natural Dutch Cavendish. From the first bowl I found it delicious, burns perfect and tastes great in every pipe. I'm probably on my third ounce now. Great stuff.

Tobaccos that Won't Bite your Tongue...At All!

I love filtered pipes and have largely neglected the unfiltered pipes in my collection until I recently started using both meer chips and the Nording Keystones in the bottom of every bowl. What a game changer! These really do work and I like them so much that I even toss a few in my Systems and...

Lane 1Q and GH American Delite in this AUGUSTA Danish Styling pipe made in Israel. It had a faint cherry ghost and, wow, did these two really pop in this bowl. This $10 estate find is a really intriguing style pipe, love the feel and the balance, but I struggled with it for a while since it...

    In Defence of WAYS

Even though my collection is considerably more modest than most, I love seeing what pipes people are smoking, and hearing about blends that I might be inspired to try.

A Most Curious Blend: Gawith’s “Jamaican Flake”

I've only smoked about six bowls but didn't get any licorice flavor, either. What I did get was fooking delicious. This is one I'm considering for a big purchase.

Post-2015 Samuel Gawith, Bob Gregory’s Story

I make it a habit of putting all my unopened tins into a snap-seal food-grade plastic box with a 62% Boveda, just in case. Never need to worry about it. Some of these boxes have pipe tobacco and (GASP!) cigars and (GASP!) cigarettes ALL IN THE SAME BOX.

Post-2015 Samuel Gawith, Bob Gregory’s Story

I bought some SG FVF and SJF tins in Oxford UK back in September and they were both in perfectly fine shape and the tobaccos are glorious. Recent purchases of Ennerdale, Bosun Cut Plug, and #7 Broken Flake have so much topping that it's like smoking incense. Can't compare to days of yore, but I...

    Filters and/or Adapters...or Not?

Really enjoying the Shorty, only about four bowls through it so far. Rice seems to work really well. I am going to compare the Keystones, granulated Meer, rice and clay once it warms up a bit.

    Filters and/or Adapters...or Not?

Totally with you on the filters. I just instinctively knew that filters would be a better choice for me. Two things I am experimenting with for filtration. One is crushed pumice stone that goes into the bowl like your clay chips. Pumice is very absorbent but the clay might even be better so I...

The Breath Method as Described by Muttonchop Piper

I struggled early to find a cadence that would keep everything cool and still burning. My Peterson 303 9mm P-Lip really taught me how to sip and smoke slow. The P-Lip pipes just ooze smoke into your mouth without any effort at all. (I have three Systems and two Dublin Filters.) One other thing...
