Which Blend Do You Wish You Bought More Of Before It Disappeared?

McCranie's Red Ribbon and McClelland's Virginia No. 24.

    New to this.

I mostly smoke Va blends but I do smoke aromatics on occasion. My favorites are Butternut Burley, Dan's DaVinci, Reiner's Professional, and Dan's Devil's Holiday in that order. These are all pretty well behaved (relatively dry smoking and not too heavily cased) with great room notes, taste...

Pipe stem broke off.. stuck inside

Another way to get it out is to screw a drywall screw (because they have a thin core and thin, deep threads which is less likely to expand the tenon) into the tenon airway just enough that it bites but not enough that it expands the tenon then give it a pull with a pair of pliers. Unless you...

On Using Wet or Dry Pipe Cleaners

Same. If I use a pipe cleaner at all, I use a dry one for regular care & maintenance. On the rare occasion I deep clean a pipe, I use Everclear. The woodworker in me shudders at the thought of excessively combining water and wood. YMMV

School me on Keeping Briar Looking New

Shirt tails. I just wipe my smooth pipes down with my shirt tail same as how I clean my glasses. I'm a simple man. On rare occasion I'll buff a pipe on the buffing wheel with carnauba.

    Lock Out Test

It's probably because you use a Radio Shack TRS80, George. :D

    DR. Question Do you Smoke?

It helps me to relax and slow down. YMMV.

    DR. Question Do you Smoke?

The Surgeon General's report statistically that pipe smokers live longer on average than non-smokers. I think there's something to it. Most likely that stress is more harmful to our health than pipe tobacco. Granted the study is from the 70's but statistics are statistics.

Not a Beginner... But did I Break this new Stanwell?

The briar where the airway enters the chamber is paper thin and comes to a point so it burns very easily until cake is built up. On pipes that I make, I take the drill bit that I used to drill the airway and gently give it a few turns to cut out that thin briar to prevent this from happening...

How Do I Turn Aromatics Into Aroenglishes?

Good suggestions already. I’ll add that it’s beneficial to let the tobaccos “marry” a bit so mix a bit in advance once you’ve found a promising combination.

    Ropp Failure

I recently turned on to a couple Ropp princes and love them. They are straights though so airway alignment isn't typically an issue. Great little smokers for the price for sure.

    Comoy's Make

I'm not a pipe historian but that's a great pipe! Nice find.

Any Suggestions on a Straight Virginia?

They don't get mentioned much but the Comoy's Va's are an easy entry into Va's, IMHO. Cask No12 Sweet Virginia has good flavor and easy on the tongue. Were it still available I'd suggest McClelland's 5100. It was the gold standard for straight Va's IMO.

Why is Penzance the Ultimate Mythical Unicorn?

That's pretty much where I am as well. About once or twice a year, I get a craving for an English blend. Outside of that, it's Va's and Vapers for me mostly.

Why is Penzance the Ultimate Mythical Unicorn?

Back when Penzance wasn't unobtainium, it was still pretty popular mostly because it was one of if not the heaviest lat bomb tobacco and that made it unique. Even then it had a legendary status mostly due to it's uniqueness. Latakia heavy blends were also all the rage then as well so the...

What Is The Most Out Of Production Tobacco In Your Collection?

I have quite a few McClelland's tins (not quite as many as cosmicfolklore but close.) Some are dated from the 90's. i have a few tins of several of the Dunhill made tobacco's like Nightcap, 965, and Deluxe Navy Rolls. There may be a few more no longer available tobacco's in my stash. Someday...

How Many Pipes do you Have?

I have a total of 69 pipes purely by accident I assure you. :) Some get smoked a little; some get smoked a lot.

How does a clean pipe smell?

My pipes smell like the tobacco's I smoke in them the most and that's exactly how I like them. The pipes I smoke Butternut Burley, Reiner's Professional, and Dan's DaVinci smell absolutely delightful. I don't really understand why you'd want them to smell any other way. Then again, I can't...
