Are Most Pipe Racks Made Wrong
All my racks are bowl down and not all my pipes are stored in racks. I don't notice any effect in how they smoke. Hand made, high grade, pipesmith, pipe maker, pipe carver, craftsmen, or artisan?
"Carver", on the other hand, makes the least sense to me since there really isn't a lot of actual wood carving involved in making a pipe depending on your definition of the word "carve." It's by no means offensive though.- wayneteipen

Oddly enough, this topic was once debated on pipemakersforum.com several years ago. I think the consensus boiled down to the terms "craftsman" and "artisan." This is actually quite true as well. "Wet" briar is heavier. However, a pipe made with wet briar will eventually dry out over a relatively short time and settle to the atmospheric humidity of the environment in which it is kept.- wayneteipen

I don't know anything about male and female trees; but he may be on to something with weight and density. I imagine, if it's true that weight and density are related, a tree that grows very slowly would likely produce a more dense burl while a tree that grows faster would likely be less dense...- wayneteipen

Pipe Cleaning Questions
The pipe cleaning ritual isn't entirely necessary at all unless there's an issue. I rarely clean my pipes. Heck, they're lucky to get a pipe cleaner run through them. If you smoke them dry and make sure they rest to dry between smokes, they won't go rancid. Remove cake if it builds up more...- wayneteipen

Underrated Factory Pipes / Brands
