    Kids, Grandkids, And Electronic Devices

I've always felt it's a matter of picking one's battles. For years, I did my own bicycle maintenance, largely because I didn't have a lot of money, and shop charges add up. I learned how to replace a chain, degrease a derailleur, adjust both front and rear derailleurs, and do my own brake jobs...

    Marriage + PAD + TAD

Why be normal? My wife and I also make different amounts, even though we're both IT professionals - I spent most of my early career at a non-profit, while she went into medical/healthcare IT. We had financial issues early in our marriage, and working them out is one thing that kept us together...

    Tastes the same as cigarettes

It's all about finding what you like. I haven't tried either Velvet or Half and Half, but I had exactly the same reaction to Sir Walter Raleigh that you did - Blech. Keep experimenting - at some point, Frog Morton may grow on you. Or not. Or something else will. :D

    That didn't sound good.

My meer has a little bit of a pinkish tinge around the top of the bowl, but I'm pretty sure that's because the first thing I smoked in it was some Erik the Red cherry blend...

    Tobacco "Wish List"

My "To Try" list is pretty much "All of the above"... and I've got at least a dozen unopened tins just sitting there, silently mocking me...

Do you Cellar or just Smoke?

I've only recently begun cellaring, as I'm new enough to pipe smoking that I'm still learning what I like well enough to smoke a lot of over a long period of time. So far, Sugar Barrel (or the H&H Match/Sweet Cask) and Prince Albert have made the cut, along with Escudo and Luxury Bullseye Flake...

    Aros Why?

As noted, sometimes it's not entirely about what you like, but about what everyone around you is going to like better. The greatest good for the greatest number, or the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few or the one, if you want to get all Utilitarian about it with John Stuart...

    Too Many Tins Open?

I've got a dozen larger jars right now that contain either blends I want on hand at all times (Black House, Escudo) or tins I'm sampling (Bjarne Viking series), and a dozen small jars that I used to transport samples at one time, 3 or 4 of which are currently empty and the rest of which contain...

    Cellaring in Earnest

Good plan - my most recent TAD order was specifically to build my cellar (can't pass up an Escudo sale...) :D

Girlfriend's comments when I said I wanted to buy a new pipe...

The correct number of pipes in a collection is n+1, where n= the number of pipes currently in the collection. :D (credit to Patrick McManus, who originally applied this formula to the contents of his gun cabinet...)

Average size of Your TAD orders.

I'm still new enough to pipe smoking that I'm exploring different blends by different blenders, so I usually get only a tin of a given blend, and restrict myself to 4 tins at any one time. The Bjarne Viking blends, for example, were introduced in a set of 4, as were the two Tsuge tinned tobacco...

    Advice for a previous non-smoker

Welcome! I was also a non-smoker before picking up a pipe. I don't know whether non-smokers are necessarily more prone to difficulties, but we're certainly not exempt. I burned my tongue regularly while figuring out how to slow down, and tried a number of aromatics, only a few of which I've...

Brown Ale, Porters, And Stouts - What's The Good Stuff?

Living in Colorado has its advantages, beer-wise. :D I enjoyed the first explosion of craft brewing that grew out of the homebrewing culture here, and tend to agree that the darker stuff is preferable to lagers and pilsners (although in the summer, they can be refreshing). But it's hard to...

    IT Folks, - Windows 10?

My wife and I bought laptops with Win8 and touchscreens, and really don't much care for the interface. We also have nearly identical desktop machines, but I got mine just before Alienware stopped shipping machines with Win7 (whew!) whereas she got Windows 8 on hers. We'll probably upgrade the...

    Introduction into virginias

Can't speak to the Virginias specifically, as I haven't yet branched into them myself (though I have some samples stashed for later) - but dedicating a pipe to a general blend has been helpful to me in distinguishing flavors as my palate develops. Keeping my Latakias separate from the Va/Per...

    First Rope - Recommendations?

Thanks for your insights, everyone. I'll take them under advisement while I put together a TAD order... Well, Black House was only too much the very first time I smoked it, which was about 3 weeks after I first started smoking. 8O Now that I know more about what I'm doing, it's become a...

Zippo Pipe Lighters and Pipe Wall Integrity

I've got some cobs that have blackened rims from overenthusiastic lighter application, but that happened early on when I had no idea what I was doing with the lighter... I've managed to avoid similar damage to my briars, but I often use matches when smoking those. I've also dialed back my Zippo...
