    Bjarne Viking sandblast?

My first pipe was a Bjarne Viking Classic. It's a bent egg sitter with a smooth walnut finish, and it's still a sentimental favorite. I mostly smoke 1Q in it, and after learning to dry out my tobacco a little and reaming out the draft hole a tiny bit, it's less prone to gurgling than it used to...

    I'm in the hospital ICU...

Yikes! Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and sorry about the cats/dog issue. I'm mildly allergic to my cats, but I'd hate to be forced to give them up... :(

If Money Was Not An Issue?

If money were no object? I'd start with a Ser Jacopo Hawkbill, then break that in while I spent a good deal of time tracking down some of the reference books I've seen mentioned in here so that I could learn in more detail what distinguishes a Nordh, Ivarsson, or Chonowitsch from any other...

    How do pipes work?

Technically, alcohol is a chemical - C2H5OH for ethanol, C3H8O for isopropyl.

Does A Cob Require Blend Dedication?

You certainly don't have to, but they're cheap enough that you can, if you so choose. I did so largely in order to keep things straight when learning the difference between different blend types (codger burleys vs. Latakia-forward blends vs. Va/Pers, etc.), so that I didn't have to concern...

    Pipe tobacco cellars?

My cellaring started somewhat inadvertently when I heard that Middleton's Sugar Barrel was being discontinued. I got my hands on one of the last tubs at P&C, and then picked up several ounces of their Match blend shortly afterwards. I put both into mason jars for future use, and followed up with...

Who Has A Set Of Criteria When Buying A Pipe?

Still enough of a beginner to not yet have set criteria - and the criteria that I do have are subject to change as I get more data (straight billiards, for example - I initially thought of them as stodgy and boring, and now they're on my list of "I could use another____").

What Blend Contained Your First Taste of Latakia?

I wound up getting my first taste of Latakia relatively early on. I'd heard so much about it that I decided to order a sampler from P&C, splitting it between aromatics and Latakia-based blends (3 of each). I also ordered a tin of Black House, which was all the rage at the time... The box arrived...

Heading home to watch the mailbox... :D

    Seasonal Allergies...

Thanks. As noted, it's snowing today (springtime in the Rockies...) which helps. It's mostly the dang trees - I'm only allergic to 3, but I'm really, really allergic to them. Plus Colorado has ragweed.

    How Long for a Cob

I've got one Missou that has a loose stem (easy fix), a Legend that I've run a poker through the bottom of (still smokes okay... just gotta make sure the tobacco's dry), and a Diplomat that turned out to have a void in the cob that burned through, leaving a cavity off to one side of the bottom...

    Seasonal Allergies...

Well, it finally happened. Colorado's allergy season has kicked into gear (although it is snowing in Denver today), and between the increased pollen count and the fact that my humidifier has sprung a leak, I'm skirting a bronchitis outbreak and coughing again, as my body tries to convert every...

    Building Your Collection

My "approach" has been more or less random. When I first looked into pipes, I didn't much care for straight billiards as I thought they looked kind of stodgy and boring. I went with a bent egg, then a couple of churchwardens, a bag of Missouri Meerschaum seconds, and at about that time wound up...

What Makes Room Note So Evasive To The Smoker

Olfaction. Our senses of taste and smell are strongly linked - to the point that apples and onions taste pretty much the same if your nose is completely plugged. Smokers are both tasting and smelling the smoke as it's produced by the pipe, whereas the observers are only smelling the exhaled...

Here’s One for the Cat People Out There (Cartoon)

:D So far, none of my 7 cats have tried any of my pipes... but it could happen. The calico is particularly smart, and could probably operate a lighter if she had thumbs.

    Finally Tried A Cob...

For shorter smokes, yes. I have a couple of Missou models and a Huck Finn that I use for lunchtime lunting (they last about half an hour to 45 minutes). On the other end of the spectrum, I also have a couple of Country Gentleman models and a Mark Twain that have much larger chambers, which last...

    Pipe Smoking Do's And Don'ts

Do keep an unsmoked cob or three on hand, just in case a friend drops by and has forgotten to bring one of his own... :D

Advice on smaller bowl, shorter smoke

The MM Huck Finn model also has a smaller bowl (same size as the Missou or Pony Express). I can stretch one of those out to half an hour or so, but if the tobacco's really dry, 10 minutes is also entirely reasonable. I have to concur with blueeyedogre on the Tsuge blowfish - it looks marvelous...

    1Q room note?

It's possible that 1Q isn't your grandfather's preferred tobacco - but it might as well be. It certainly gets compliments when I smoke it around other people.

    Pipe Clenching

It's definitely going to depend on a number of very subjective criteria. I would not have expected my Rossi 8320's to be good clenchers, but they're actually quite well balanced. Or maybe I've just got freakishly strong jaws... :D
