    Your favorite time to smoke?

Since I generally only get one or two bowls a week, the Friday afternoon/evening ritual has become my favorite time, either lounging at the B&M with my pipe and a good book on my e-reader/phone/tablet, or sitting on the back porch under the umbrella until the sun dips behind the other houses and...

The Most Interesting Man in the World

There was a spot on NPR over the weekend talking with the actor about his "overnight success" after 50 years of acting... My Big Break - NPR No mention of pipe smoking, or the fact that he played a redshirt on Star Trek who didn't die... :D

You May Point And Laugh East Coasters

It's been warm over here in Denver, too - which is a nice change from the cool, damp spring weather we'd been having. Nowhere near 108, though... Stay hydrated!

    looking to buy 1st meerschaum

I bought my first meer from site sponsor MeerschaumStore.com, and have been quite happy with it. They don't have a lot of churchwardens in stock at the moment, but keep an eye out... They also list several that have double stems - both a longer churchwarden stem and a shorter one, which isn't a...

    A Minor Cancer Inconvenience...

Glad you're okay - skin cancer is both one of the easiest to treat and at the same time one of the most virulent cancers, so good on you and your doc for getting that checked out.

    pipe rest

Egg box on a bookshelf in a room that's normally closed off - we've got a somewhat neurotic foster cat that's become permanent, and she's not fond of the rest of the household. Heck, she barely tolerates me... There's some residual aroma, but it's not unpleasant and I give my pipes a monthly...

How many blends do you have?

Okay, I don't feel nearly so bad about the 12 jars I accumulated pretty much right off the bat... Or the additional 12 (smaller) jars that I acquired in order to take samples along on a cruise, which then were used to store the samples I was gifted on said cruise... Or the 11 blends that I've...

    Making Clay Pipes

There's an episode of "How It's Made" that includes a visit to a clay pipe maker - I tried to find the episode or clip online, but the bit I found was about drainage pipes, not smoking pipes. Edit - Season 13, Episode 4 includes "Replica Clay Pipes". Episode is available for purchase online.

How Long Have You Been Smoking A Pipe?

2 and a half years now - I actually joined this forum before buying my first pipe. I was researching both the health risks and the pitfalls that newbies run into, and this forum was a great deal of help with both. I wound up buying a Bjarne Viking Classic from a local B&M, and a couple of ounces...

A bit on the serious side - how long have you been smoking and family reaction

I'm 49 and started smoking a pipe just about 2 1/2 years ago. My wife is not entirely pleased, but she's been fairly supportive anyway as I did my homework before starting - her mother was in hospice, dying of lung cancer right at the time I was first considering the pipe, so I was both thorough...

    grab bag from corncobpipes

I ordered a grab bag a couple of years back when I was just starting out, and I concur that it's a great deal. I wound up with a couple of Diplomats (one Apple, one 5th Avenue), several Legends (bent and straight, mostly Flat), a Great Dane sized monster that had been shaped like a Diplomat...

    Drew Estate God series:

Interesting point of view, Settersbrace. Personally, I can think of a lot of tobacco blends whose names aren't particularly descriptive. "Escudo", for example - it's only descriptive of the spun-cut physical appearance, and then only if you happen to speak Portuguese (or are a history nerd...)...

How do YOU carry your pipe, tobacco and gear?

I use a Maxpedition "Fatty", which I then toss into either my backpack, messenger bag, or cargo pocket. Just bought a second "Fatty" for extended trips where I might (just might) have an opportunity to smoke more often than once or twice... :D

    Packages STOLEN off my porch...

Not sure when the shift happened, but my neighborhood has those "clustered" mail box slots with locks. Smaller packages will fit, but there are 2 bins at the bottom of each cluster that originally were intended for larger items, which would be placed in the lockers and a key placed in the...

Latakia – the Cilantro of Pipe Tobacco

I think the metaphor works, but there's a genetic component to cilantro-tasting that leaves some unfortunate souls incapable of perceiving its charms. Personally, I feel that way about broccoli and brussels sprouts (though oddly, I don't mind brocolini or other forms of cabbage...), but I enjoy...
