    Would You—or Do You—Wear a Smoking Cap?

Smoking hats and jackets were popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and were intended to be worn while smoking in order to keep smoke out of one's hair and off of one's formal jacket. After dinner, it was often the practice for the men to retire to the smoking room for cigars/pipes and...

    Smoking Restrictions in WA State

At the risk of getting into a political discussion, you should probably check your math. In terms of actual spending, the amount spent in 1950 is about 1/6 of what was spent in 2015 (according insidegov.com's figures - and I'll admit, I'm not sure if that's apples-to-apples, with amounts...

What's the Most You Would Ever Spend on a Pipe?

I came to pipes late, but I applied a lesson that I learned via other expensive hobbies (musical instruments, firearms, etc.) - find the price point at which you get the best quality for the least money at a level that will let you enjoy the hobby instead of carping about your crappy equipment...

How to Pack Escudo Navy De Luxe

I haven't had much luck yet with fold-and-stuff methods, so I generally rub out my Escudo. And since I love just sitting and enjoying the flavor, I tend to use larger bowls (both wider and taller - my "cobwarden" Country Gentleman is a favorite).

An Open Apology to Cob Smokers

The site only seems to have pictures of straight stems, but if you click through to a particular stem's page (for example, the #306 Spear 2.75), they list both Straight and Bent style options.

    Into The Badlands (AMC)

Planned to DVR it, then forgot. Will have to see if it's being rebroadcast, or is available via On Demand...

    Savinelli PAD

Very nice. I've got a couple of Rossi 8320s, but have been eyeing a Sav. That finish is gorgeous!

    Gear Punk , Opinions ?

And the beat goes on... :D I like the look, myself. Definitely out of my price range, as are a lot of the artistic steampunk works out there (many of which do sell for a lot more than $10, so not all of those old clocks died in vain...). The art pieces in turn inspire those of us with a DIY...

    Dumping ash outside

If I'm in my backyard, I'll either have an ashtray available or I'll just let it go into the landscaping (depending on whether I'm having a leisurely smoke in a patio chair or smoking while doing yardwork...). If I'm elsewhere (which almost never happens), I'll usually just stash the pipe in a...

Why Is Syrian different from Cyprian Latakia And Could They Change It?

Tobacco is an agricultural product, and as such is literally a product of its environment. The differences start with the split between Nicotiana Rustica and Nicotiana Tabacum and go on from there to various subspecies and hybrids, different processing methods, and regional variations depending...

    Please Pass This On

I think my eyeball just got stuck from rolling too hard...

Any good baccy recommendations topped with 'peated-scotch'?

To be perfectly honest, I'd find it hard to justify using fine single-malt as a topping for pipe tobacco. Best serve it in a glass on the side with a little bit of water (also on the side) and use one of the lesser (but still tasty) blended whiskies as a tobacco topping... :D Just my opinion...

    What Is Your Smoking Cadence?

I've found that if I can just sit and smoke (and maybe read a book), I don't have to think much about cadence anymore. On the other hand, if I'm lunting or doing yardwork (or if I'm smoking an aromatic that I haven't let dry properly), I'm back to constant relights after a few puffs. Evidently...

    What's Your Goal

I would say that my goal is to develop my palate for tobacco to approximately the same level as my palate for beer and whisky has developed. I'm not much of a wine drinker, so right now my tobacco palate is probably slightly ahead of my "I like heavier reds and sweeter whites" wine palate... :D...

    Factual tobacco descriptions?

It does take time. I was a non-smoker before taking up the pipe, but I am both an inveterate beer snob and a skeptic with regard to the more, er, florid descriptions of tastes. Part of it is, as you say, "poetic license" - every palate is different, as you'll find if you go to a tasting event...

    Real Dumb New Guy Question

Not everyone has wide-open nasal passages. Adenoids, turbinates, even oversized tonsils can get in the way of using one's nose to breathe. And don't get me started on seasonal allergies... I had a cleft palate at birth, and the reconstruction resulted in a restricted nasal airway as there wasn't...

Would you advise your children to smoke a pipe?

I only have cats, and their lack of thumbs makes it difficult for them to operate a Zippo. Thank the Gods...

    Unknown Danger of e-Cigarettes

I work in IT, and there are regular blips of panic over printer toner particulate matter. Any particulate matter getting into one's lungs has the potential to cause problems, be it cigarette smoke, e-juice vapor, burning leaves, tire fires, or a smog-filled atmospheric inversion. I have no...

What SF And/Or Fantasy Book Would You Like Made Into A Movie Or Mini Series?

Raise The Titanic (1980) I'm guessing that the critical reception of this version probably kept any further attempts from being, er, attempted...
