Aromatics & Blends With Toppings
Ditto on University Flake. It is the only thing approaching an aro that I can smoke for the same reasons you describe. Try Carter Hall too and I even mix in UF with CH and find that to be quite nice as they complement each other for some reason.- jdb67

Carter Hall (A Review)
I am a newbie and CH has saved me. I call it training wheels for pipes. I see references to the chemical thing, but I don't detect that myself. I do find a little drying time is still best for me though moisture out of the pouch is very close. I am still smoking it and have plenty stocked...- jdb67

North American Pipe Makers

Read what he said above...then I will add that I try to make what I put in the bottom long strands that don't compress in on itself easily and try to build an air cushion there which is more forgiving of the column of tobacco getting compressed (tamping is a practiced thing...- jdb67

Woohoo. I Think I've Figured It Out
As another newbie, I agree completely and this echoes my aha moment as well. Becoming one with the tamper has made a huge difference (I am not "one" yet, but at least I am not clueless about it anymore). I personally think too much attention is put on packing methods and not enough on tamping...- jdb67

I have no doubt you know what it means to you to slow down...I need help translating that for what I would really change. I am assuming the main thing to attempt to slow down is the puffing cadence and how hard I draw on the pipe. My struggle is that if I wait too long between puffs it seems...- jdb67
