I'm a Noobie and I Need Help with Tongue Bite! Please!

For some reason Carter Hall let's me get away with being...less than intelligent. Just the other day I decided to load up University Flake. I don't recall ever being bit by UF in the past. I thought it might be too moist, but that was a fleeting thought. I rubbed it out, loaded the pipe and...

    Aromatics & Blends With Toppings

Ditto on University Flake. It is the only thing approaching an aro that I can smoke for the same reasons you describe. Try Carter Hall too and I even mix in UF with CH and find that to be quite nice as they complement each other for some reason.

Review: Quiet Nights by GL Pease

Nice review Pipelady20. I have a tin of QN to try. I will have to be super careful if it bites others...a bite to others is likely a rabid flame-throwing dragon for me lol.

    Carter Hall (A Review)

I am a newbie and CH has saved me. I call it training wheels for pipes. I see references to the chemical thing, but I don't detect that myself. I do find a little drying time is still best for me though moisture out of the pouch is very close. I am still smoking it and have plenty stocked...

    Peterson Irish Flake

I have a good memory smoking IF with a friend (pretty sure alcohol was involved and an empty stomach) when all of a sudden I was on the ground with the room spinning. Good times...but not something I try to repeat. To this day when I see him he says (use your thickest Irish accent)...Ohhh, the...

    Show Off your Pipe Collection

I knew I would start seeing some amazing collections. I am enjoying seeing these broader pictures of collections and where we keep them. Keep em' coming!

    North American Pipe Makers

I am enjoying accumulating artisan pipes from the USA. The top and two on the right are Kirk Bosi. The left is a guy in Nashville named Cody Pellerin. I also have a Mark Tinsky, Tim West, Dr. Bob, and Paul Perri.

    MY WIFE LIKES IT!!!

Someone once told me, you need to have these things before you marry: a beard and a motorcycle. I will add pipe smoking to that list.

    What It "Smells" Like

I apologize in advance, but when I saw the title of this thread the obvious answer is....teen spirit.

Your Suggestions and Tips Have Helped! (Few More Questions Though)

I'm going for the Carter Hall camp too. Learning how to smoke and not torching your mouth was the first priority for me and to some degree still is. Learn how to pack, light, and tamp in a way that you can get through a smoke of CH without too many relights (what is too many I don't know...I...

Nicotine Buzz on a Empty Stomach

I highly recommend you pick up some Peterson's Irish Flake, don't eat all day and give it a try lol. I have a good memory smoking with a friend having done just that and all of a sudden I was on the ground with the room spinning. Good times...but not something I try to repeat. To this day when...

    Dottle???

I'm with PipesRock. Read what he said above...then I will add that I try to make what I put in the bottom long strands that don't compress in on itself easily and try to build an air cushion there which is more forgiving of the column of tobacco getting compressed (tamping is a practiced thing...

My New Smoker and Scorched Earth (I Mean Mouth) Travails

I won't deny it went through my mind lol...I almost ended with...and keep the topic to tobacco!

Woohoo. I Think I've Figured It Out

As another newbie, I agree completely and this echoes my aha moment as well. Becoming one with the tamper has made a huge difference (I am not "one" yet, but at least I am not clueless about it anymore). I personally think too much attention is put on packing methods and not enough on tamping...

My New Smoker and Scorched Earth (I Mean Mouth) Travails

I have no doubt you know what it means to you to slow down...I need help translating that for what I would really change. I am assuming the main thing to attempt to slow down is the puffing cadence and how hard I draw on the pipe. My struggle is that if I wait too long between puffs it seems...

My New Smoker and Scorched Earth (I Mean Mouth) Travails

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) I don't claim to know much, but I do know I have a very sensitive mouth and have had a number of bad experiences on my road to smoking a pipe. This post is just hoping what is working for me perhaps resonates with someone struggling too. 1...
