    Stain? Sand and stain?

You can just stain match it. Dark brown diluted with more alcohol will do it. If it’s too dark rub it with a little alcohol to take some off. I like to lightly rub down the bowl with 000 steel wool to get the dirt off. Then I use MicroMesh on the whole wood surface before waxing. It. It...

    Sanding vulcanite stems. still learning

Were you around for the flame wars of the aughts? The big question on tobacco forums was to moderate or not moderate. A board would go under and the members would flood another board. Trolling and flaming ensued. Many people were banned.

    Sanding vulcanite stems. still learning

I’m going to address this because you quoted me. I agree with you that there is a learning curve restoring stems. It took me awhile, I’ve been doing it a long time, I still make mistakes and still learn new things. I don’t object to using a magic eraser and a nail buffer. If you use that...

    English Nickel Plate?

That’s great info. I am glad I wasn’t suffering some sort of delusion. American pipes are pretty consistently marked until maybe 1930. Then I guess if it isn’t marked as silver, it’s nickel. Or aluminum which is pretty easy to spot. So if I pull a silver hallmarked cap off an old English...

    Sanding vulcanite stems. still learning

Saying that sanding and buffing “destroys” stems when that is the primary method many people use to achieve good results is pretty offensive.

Molina / Barasso 106 - Difficult to Draw

Good advice. One more thing. Certain stems, seems like acrylics especially, can sometimes have a sort of hangnail in the airway from the manufacturing process. You can get fluff caught on it or excess buildup. Ream it out with a straightened paper clip or a long small gauge drill bit.

Geez! Why mot just say nobody knows what the f*** they’re doing except you. Lots of people can be right at the same time. Many people have good results with a variety of methods.

Different formulas of rubber can sand differently. Brown is really common. 3000g is really fine so it could take awhile. I like to wet sand with 800g. Even that isn’t fast. To check your work, clean the stem off and look at it in direct sunlight. You should be able to spot the oxidation.
