    Filter pipes can be weird. I have a couple that smoke nice and dry without a filter. And I have others that smoke swampy without a filter. I have to use filters in them. So…use a filter in that pipe.

    I got this cased Vienna Meerschaum in today. It just needed a light cleanup. The stem might be Bakelite. It has a bone tenon. I’m thinking maybe 1940s.

    Should I be Skeptical of Inexpensive Meerschaum Pipes?

    Lower priced meerschaums might have less sharp shaping or carving. The stem and tenon fittings may be lower quality. Probably still smoke okay though.

    Most pipes get warm but not hot. The odd one will get hot enough you don’t want to grab it. Sometimes you can figure out why, sometimes not.

    Drilling far forward in a bent pipe mortise is normal. Sometimes theres a moisture well, sometimes not. Passing a pipe cleaner isn’t a consideration.
