    Sullivan's Special 69 Flake/State Express Navy Cut

Absolutely true. Sobranie bought them in the Fifties and introduced pipe tobacco under their name about 1970.

    Sullivan's Special 69 Flake/State Express Navy Cut

    Unfortunately I can’t say. I’ve had the Astley’s 44 but not the Sullivans 69.

    Sullivan's Special 69 Flake/State Express Navy Cut

A great tobacco, unfortunately long gone. The earlier tins were 2 ounces and had a black label: And the later tins were 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and had a blue one. I gather this iteration is the one you recall:

    Comoy's catalogue

The OP has that in the works

    Comoy's catalogue

This is why I think it dates from earlier but was still in use in ‘56: This notice appeared in the October 1951 issue of Tobacco. Few manufacturers at that time were issuing new catalogs annually.

    Comoy's catalogue

Incidentally, this is an example of what I mean by a very down generation copy:

    Comoy's catalogue

By the way, the cover letter & price list are from 1956 but I think this actual catalog had been in use since the autumn of 1951. Is there anything in the catalog proper that suggests a specific date of issuance?

    Comoy's catalogue

Me too please! I’ve seen very down generation versions of parts but never a clean copy. What a marvelous find!

Help finding more pictures of the first pipe owned by an Englishman

Looks an awful lot like Claude Rains to me.

Help finding more pictures of the first pipe owned by an Englishman

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Without hucksters we’d be chafed by the burlap sacks we’re wearing, getting giardia from drinking water from the nearest river, and watching clouds drift by instead of streaming porn Downton Abbey.

Charatan's Make ROSEDALE Estate Tobacco Pipe, WOULD BE MINT BUT-

Since the OP is obviously interested in Charatan seconds I have an assortment that I’d let go cheap. Most are one-of-a-kind specimens of Reuben Era pipes at their finest. The ones I’m willing to sell include a Rose Marie, a Rose Kennedy, a Rosie O’Donnell, and a Rosie Grier. If you buy them...

Charatan's Make ROSEDALE Estate Tobacco Pipe, WOULD BE MINT BUT-

I’m skeptical about the Charatan attribution and can find no support for it. Who Made That Pipe is no help; it lists no Rosedale at all. But I do agree the stem is a replacement. Otherwise I would expect it to have an R logo stamped on it.

Who Is H.G.P. of Barclay Rex Fame?

What’s Heckuva to him, or he to Heckuva?

Today I did Something I Have Never Done Before

Sounded more like a brag than an admission.

Who is your Favorite Current Artisan Pipe Maker ?

Agreed Al, but unfortunately I think Michail is indeed out of the game now. I’m pretty sure Chris told me that in Vegas last October.

    Ash Wednesday (Take 2)

As everyone but aging Boomers know that's now called grooming. I hate to see the meaning of common words change, especially into something unsavory. I was driving behind this van the other day. Either this poor man is hopelessly behind the times or his business model is very different from...

    Does Anyone Else do This?

Just a couple of thoughts: This is not that far removed from Howard Hughes saving his urine in glass jars And has the OP thought about monetizing his collection on TinBids?

Just curious what’s the purpose of the brackets, other than to vex the ignorant?

Can’t Post Pictures on this Site After Upgrading to new iPhone Model

GodDAMNit! Where were you last October? So I was right about the pivotal role played by my stupidity after all. Thank you sardonicus87. My new dilemma is this: do I continue using Chrome and pretend I never saw your post? Or do I admit I’m a moron? Or do I compromise by doing both?
