Mint condition, aside from the small crack that appears to only be a mm deep at most, doesn't even show when you take the stem out and look. Ready to smoke

This is a handmade Charatan's make estate tobacco pipe from the United Kingdom. The pipe has a unique paneles sitting chimney body shape and is perfect for collectors of tobacciana.

What shall I do with the tiny crack?

The first order of business when I get it in is to clean and smoke it!.:)

Then what should I do?

Looks like a replacement stem that had a tenon that was a little too big for the shank and maybe that caused the crack. I'd take the stem out clean it all real good then superglue and clamp the crack. After it sets, but while the clamp is still on the shank gently try to fit the stem back in. If it feels tight lightly sand the tenon a little at a time until you can fit it in without stressing the wood. Put a little beeswax on it and twist it in and you should be ok. Not the best fix, but other than banding the shank it should be usable. If it doesn't work, you didn't hear this from me.... 😝

One observation

Charatan also made pipes for Captains of Industry, and Barons of Finance.

I suspect the Rosedale line is a little lower grade.:)

The seller said it was mint, except—

What if the carver picked up a chunk of briar and a song came to his mind—-

Somebody could have replaced the stem on a mint Charatan Rosedale.

Or maybe they used a lower grade of briar, and less seasoned.

Lots of people rib on Charatans Make pipes due to their odd shapes and sometimes clunky feeling pipes. I personally love them. I have a dozen or so from pre Lane, all the way up until Dunhill sold the name in the mid 1980s. I have a silver banded Bulldog from 1926 or so. Back when they made "typical" shapes. Once Lane bought them in the early 1950s, the shapes turned wild. For me, the wilder the better. :)

I have three Lane Era Charatan's Make pipes. They all seem well made and have good fitment. Yes, some examples of Lane Era pipes are unusual. The example above is a poor example of even those. It was sold as a pipe for someone looking to get a "deal" rather than someone looking to get a fine example of what Charatan pipes were and could be.

Looking at my photos, I cannot see a word about Charatan’s Make or Lane or nothing but Rosedale.

Even if Rosedale is kind of a Briarlee, I paid two good twenties for a real Charatan and by God it had better be one, when I unwrap it!

I don’t care if it’s a a Select Grain or a Morocco or a Dunsboro Charatan I paid for the real one!

Rosedale does sound kinda Charatan, you know?

I never want to overlook an orchid.

I’m skeptical about the Charatan attribution and can find no support for it. Who Made That Pipe is no help; it lists no Rosedale at all.

But I do agree the stem is a replacement. Otherwise I would expect it to have an R logo stamped on it.

As agnosticpie said, also Jhowell advised on the Chinrester thread:

It’s been my honor and privilege to go from Bug Tussle to both medical school and then quit that and do what I thought I’d do best, go to law school, and then somehow I’ve dodged all the slings and arrows and I want me a doctor and lawyer grade real Charatan, in my retirement, like the other boys, you know?

In medical school on the first day they said to us

Do no harm!

And I reckon that’s good starting advice for my Charatan’s Make Rosendale

In law school they taught me about implied warranties of fitness.

PK Pipes loves the United States Postal Service, and so far that’s a good measure of his character.

Should be here by April Fool’s Day.

That man enticed me with a promise of a Charatan’s Make Rosedale Estate that would be mint—-

Sort of a Second Hand Rose

Van, wanting something to be so - perhaps it fits in well with the folksy yarn of a tale you want to spin - doesn’t make it so. If you want a fine Lane era Charatan’s Make with an authentic comfort stem - spend the money and buy one. I have three. None owned by Robert Conrad but all very much the real thing. They are fine pipes (but with lousy vulcanite stems). the grain on each is beautiful.

My ROSEDALE was obviously blessed by a hand cut stem.

The man who peddled me, a elderly senior citizen almost in my late sixties, on a gubbermint pension, with the same Medicare Advatange as Luigi, promised me a Charatan’s Make ROSEDALE Estate that would be mint —

I spent 41 years serving the public behind a desk and while I’ve been fooled, I can count those on the fingers of one hand.

IMG_9112.jpeg

My mother sat me down, a half mile South of Bug Tussle, and wouldn’t let me get back up until I could sing every bar and note of Coat of Many Colors, when that hymn came out.

I hope someday we can retrace what ever became of the Charlie Rich looking pipe seller feller down in Springfield who had a young son about our ages, 35 years ago.

Young Charlie only needed a mane of silver hair and a few decades of living to equal his father’s senatorial demeanor and impeccable charm. But we’d watch his father sell those ladies magnificent gifts for the men they loved most and marveled at how he’d lock up the shop along Bloody Glenstone and always go home to Mama.

I’ll bet that boy is really, really proud of his Daddy today.

His Daddy didn’t palm off French Made Charatans with double comfort bits!

IMG_9113.jpegIMG_9114.jpegIMG_9115.jpegIMG_9116.jpegIMG_9117.jpegIMG_9118.jpeg

The cheapest briars he sold were Savenellies!

Could you imagine if old Charlie had cheated even one of the fancy matrons or their sturdy young sons by peddling them a quasi counterfeit Charatan?

Those boys would hob nob around other boys who had real English made Charatans, and eventually old Charlie would be exposed!

Speaking of Old Charlie, my mother had me practice and practice singing this old Porter Wagoner classic because she wanted it sang at her funeral.

But try as I would I never could perform Charlie’s Picture to her statisfaction.

She said if it saved one fool from his fate it would be worth it all.:)

My mother hated booze, she surely did.

Simple As I Am LP version

I don’t think a man who has a 100% rating and has sold over 3,400 pipes would cheat an old man like me of $41.

But let’s wait and see, shall we?

And another fact that double comforts me is PK Pipes priced my Charatan’s Make ROSEDALE Estate pipe that is mint but - at $40 and I tried and tried to buy it at $25 and $30 and finally gave up and paid $34 plus shipping and the dad blasted taxes all them gubbermints place on the backs of old men like me.

PK Pipes was proud of it, you know?

So many people have advised me not to smoke my cracked Yello Bole. So I have not ever since it got cracked. I feel like that is where I draw the line with wear and tear and I generally will never buy a pipe with a crack willingly but sometimes I wonder how bad it would be to just smoke as is

Looks like it might have a crack.

That’s the mint condition but—-

IMG_9119.jpeg

But that London England made pipe does look kind of minty to me otherwise.

I sure hope this wuddent one of them there Tragic Romance type situations

Stonewall Jackson Great Old Songs LP version

Some beautiful young maiden might have gifted a Charatan’s Make ROSEDALE to her intended and then the foolish, ignorant, stupid dumb son of a chatelaine refused to smoke a pipe with a tiny crack.

I’ll bet she didn’t pine away the hours waiting for his eventual return, you know?

We’uns here are going to blaze the path and risk $41 about April Fool’s Day to find out.

My bet is that crack will still be there on Judgement Day not any wider.

We will see, my friend.
