Just wondering, did the cheeses come from La Fromagerie? They got me into a serious cheese habit for some years, although the plague broke that in 2020 and poor old Eric died of unrelated causes; haven't been in since, but now you make me realise my error.
Semi-aros like University Flake or Erinmore are ok now and again, Ennerdale Flake for the full enchilada. But I have so much non-aro, as such, to try, they seldom get my attention.
Strictly speaking, English blends are aromatics, but they're also only occasional smokes for me at the moment.

Yes, I agree that the Rattray trio are VaKyPer and outside the straight va realm. For some reason, I can't abide SG Best Brown, while I love FVF - my brown flake goto is Germain's, which is also a straight va (despite frequent claims otherwise).
Yes, folded and stuffed flakes have more intensity, for me anyway. I used to break them up and rub them out, but something @simong said changed my ways for the better - I even fold and stuff wet FVF.
F&T Vintage is the best of their flakes, imho. I keep one tin around. Do not be put off from FVF either, it's very very good and, if you are lunting but need to pop in and out of nonsmoking zones, very controllable; also, ages beautifully.
