    JimInks, I've Gotta Ask.

I never take reviews as gospel, but having reliable, consistent reviewers really facilitates making informed purchase decisions based on what types of flavors I like or am interested in trying. It gives me a better idea of what I'm buying and what to expect, and I appreciate that. I try to wait...

How is D&R Ryback Compared to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired?

Two Timer is where it's at. Plus, the not-so-subtle tin bag label is amusing.

How is D&R Ryback Compared to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired?

I have only had what was sold as Dark Bird's Eye, which I'm really digging so far. I might pick up an ounce each of the other two just for shits and giggles next time I place an order, at least to confirm that they are the same thing or so close that any distinction is immaterial. Why they would...

How is D&R Ryback Compared to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired?

In that case, have you tried Sutliff TS-12? Good on its own or as a blender.

    Time for a clay pipe.

Meh, if you're careful with them, they can be smoked virtually forever. I don't consider clays - or cobs, for that matter - to be disposable.

How is D&R Ryback Compared to Mac Baren Old Dark Fired?

I have not had Ryback, but D&R makes some very solid, natural blends. I've smoked quite a bit of Three Sails (shag VA) and Two Timer (rough cut burley), and they're both excellent. I prefer to hydrate shag cuts. They can get a little hot and harsh smoked dry straight out of the bag. I love HH...

Studies on Pipe and Cigar smokers - Inconsistent!?

I don't have much to contribute, but I've noticed a fair amount of confirmation bias - on the part of both smokers and anti-smokers - regarding information on the heath effects of tobacco consumption. Anti-smokers tend to point to any article or study implying that any tobacco use is an imminent...

Do You have a Pipe You can’t Bring Yourself to Smoke?

I have a Genod panel that I kept for years without smoking it because it's such a lovely and well-made piece and I didn't want to char the rim. I always really wanted to smoke it, but couldn't bring myself to do so. Eventually I came to the conclusion that life is too short not to enjoy the pipe...

    Meerschaum Pipe Tenons

I was under the impression that the stem itself just threaded directly into the meerschaum, which seemed like a pretty shoddy design. Glad to find out that I was mistaken.

    Meerschaum Pipe Tenons

Exactly what I was thinking - that there was no way the threads would hold up to repeated disassembly and that I should remove the threaded part as infrequently as possible. I tried to just pull the stem off at first, but it's very tight and wouldn't budge. At least now I know I have to turn it...

Accidentally Removed Some Finish off the Rim

Mineral oil is often sold in drugstores as a laxative to be taken by mouth. It's very cheap and could be considered "food grade" as it is safe to consume in small quantities.

Inaugural smoke in my new meer: GH Dark Bird's Eye

    Meerschaum Pipe Tenons

That's good to know. I might pick up a couple of spares, then.

    Meerschaum Pipe Tenons

Doh! Well I feel stupid now...

    Meerschaum Pipe Tenons

My first meerschaum pipe came in the mail today - an AKB. I have a couple of questions for those experienced with meers: Q1: Is the tenon supposed to screw directly into the meerschaum like this? It looks a little crumbly as it is. I would have assumed that there would be some sort of threaded...

    Roast Beef Sammich Heaven

This thread has my stomach rumbling. Now I've got to make roast beef sandwiches again. For the sauce, I just mix mayo and lots of extra hot horseradish. I like that "clear out your sinuses" tingle like retrohaling a heavy perique blend.

Accidentally Removed Some Finish off the Rim

Maybe try the old "rub a walnut on it" trick?

***What Are You Smoking, March 2024?***

Back to back bowls of Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic in a MM Missouri Pride cob. Pretty tasty stuff; it had me drooling the whole time.

    Time for a clay pipe.

Huh, weird. Well, it's not going to keep me from smoking mine.
  20. Lumbridge

    Time for a clay pipe.

Do clays in particular have a higher incidence of this? I've never heard anything about it. Why would clays carry a higher cancer risk than any other type of pipe?
