How Long Does It Take You to Smoke Through a Tin?

Don't really smoke tins per say as I smoke homemade whole leaf blends, but it's about a tin a week, 3-4 bowls a day. I try to keep only 3 or 4 different blends going at one time as too much choice and I feel like I'm just juggling jars around.

Canadians: Where Do You Get Your Pipe Cleaners?

Haven't tried the bj longs but I'm sure they are tops. Can't justify spending more on pipe cleaners though at the rate I use them. Almost spend as much on pipe cleaners as I do tobacco(I buy whole leaf and do my own processing) with 3 or 4 bowls a day. The Randys tapered cleaners are much...

Canadians: Where Do You Get Your Pipe Cleaners?

Just get them from Amazon lately. They got Randys or Zen for similar price to a b and m. When I'm in town(vancouver) I'll grab them from a smoke shop or convenience store that sells a wide variety of weed paraphernalia.

    Suddenly Can Not Taste

I've got some allergies going right now myself and things have been tasting sub par that's for sure. Kinda sucks as I'll be mixing up some blends for the boys at the pipe club, but I just gotta trust my notes and list of blends I have compiled. Smoking actually helps somewhat with the allergies...

Slow Cooking Tobacco in Oven for Flavor Enhancement

I've done alot of the stoving technique you've described with whole leaf tobacco to make my blends. I do it all the time to virginia tobaccos, I pretty much don't smoke unstoved Virginia. The time in the oven does wonders to wake up and sweeten them. But alot of blenders already do this...

Are Many Millennials Smoking Pipes? Also: Seek Tobacco Suggestions

As for what tobacco to tempt the youngins.....not sure really. Sweet aromatics have tempted many a would be smoker including myself, but ultimately come up short because of rookie smoking techniques or changing tastes. While an English blend can broaden the pallet and open up some doors as it...

Are Many Millennials Smoking Pipes? Also: Seek Tobacco Suggestions

I think there is definitely an interest among millenials. You can see from YouTube videos and even local pipe clubs having new blood. Seems like 10 -15 years ago smoking a pipe was basically only for old men. I am a millenial (1986) but I've started over 10 years ago(off and on, now full...

    Casings and Toppings With Rum/Whiskey/Liqueurs

I've used Tonka beans before, just grind them up and soak them in your choice of booze for a week or so. Spray it right on the tobacco. I would suggest using a high ratio if Tonka to alcohol. If it's too weak and you want a good Tonka flavour, you'll end up having to spray lots of booze to get...

Flake Does Not Stay Lit; Goes Out Every Minute!

Depends on your climate and humidity but I dry my flakes overnight for 8 hours or more. They can seem dry to the touch but still contain a fair bit of moisture in the leaf. You can put your dried flake back in a jar and give it a day or two for the moisture to even out again and sometimes you'll...

    Recent Memorable Smokes

It was around 45% Virginia 35% oriental and 20% perique. I say "around" because the actual percentages were slightly different 40/30/30. But I have my perique stored in very high case(as it arrives from WLT) and it looses about 1/3 weight if dried out to smokable case as the Virginia and...

    Recent Memorable Smokes

Not a bowl in particular, but I recently made a whole leaf blend that was a stoved plug with red Virginia, prelip oriental and perique and it really hit the spot. I was getting a bit tired of the Kentucky heavy blends which are my staple and this was a nice change of pace, especially with the...

What Do You Do with Residual Crumbs?

I’d say number 2. No need to waste and sometimes those bottom of the barrel smokes are actually good. I’m actually smoking a mix of a full English and a strong vaper with blacked stoved Virginia right now. It’s hittin the spot. I only mix and process my own whole leaf blends so I never toss...

    How to Tighten Up Tenon?

A quick, non permanent, cheap and easy fix that needs to be replaced every once in a while but still works very effectively is Teflon tape. I use this on a few pipes that have loosened up or that I have replaced the stem and it doesn’t quite fit tight enough. Just be sure to turn the stem in the...

How Many Pipe Tobaccos Can You Tell When Blind Tasting

My observations are a bit biased as i only smoke my own blends lately. So i know whats in them(most of the time unless i forget:p) and knowing what is in them I can taste subtle differences of a few percent 2.5-5% for things like perique, latakia and orientals. And maybe around 5-10% variations...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. Black kentucky twist. 75% kentucky 25% red and bright virginia Twisted up and stoved until it was nice and black. About 16 hours. This one's just as you imagine it, stout, smooth, earthy and dark. A little soft sweetness, cream and fruit from the virginias, but only enough...

    All Tobacco Tastes the Same

Some things take time. Just like your first few glasses of wine or coffee probably tasted the same and only after many many times do the subtle differences become apparent. Tobacco is a bit easier as there are a wide variation in blends. Smoking as slow as you can is a good place to start and...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2021?***

Whole leaf blend. Ky per or flake. 45% kentucky 40% oriental 15% perique Pressed stoved the plug for a few hours. Became a nice dark colour. Surprisingly sweet for a Virginia free blend. The Kentucky is mellowed from the stoving and paired with the fruit notes of the perique, it becomes more...

    Why Press?

I only smoke my own whole leaf blends and much prefer to press and twist. With virginia tobaccos a ribbon vs flake is a big difference even with the same leaf. Also with stoving tobaccos you'll get slightly different results with plugs vs a loose tobacco. You can stove some or all components...
