Want to try making your own pipe?

I know I'm no expert, but I enjoy making pipes and I've noticed a growing membership here that wants to try making a pipe themselves. So I thought I'd throw this out there. I have a decent shop and a pretty good supply of briar that I'd be willing to donate, sort of. If anyone on these forums...

    Here Goes Nothing??

With even a worst attempt, using a pipe kit, you'll still have a pipe that will smoke and the best part, you made it yourself. Igloo, go for it, I'm sure you'll enjoy a pipe you made yourself, I have to say to anyone that wants to give making themselves a pipe, the first pipe I made was ugly...

    Here Goes Nothing??

Good luck on your pipe making and have fun with it. I look forward to seeing just what you come up with.

What Makes A Good Pipe ?

As already said, 1) I have to like the way the pipe looks. 2) The pipe needs to smoke good and to do that, it has to have a good open draw. I like to have the drilling dead on center and for it to pass a pipe cleaner easily as well, but those two aren't a sure deal killer. I've seen pipes that...

    Sound advice?

Yep, I agree with you unclearthur, overheat acrylic and the stem most likely can't be saved. Another word of advice, if your not comfortable making more permanent repairs, or repairs of any kind, send the pipe to someone that can do it for you. Better to pay for the repair done by another and...

    Interested in pipe making.

I'm with unclearthur, started out with a 10x14 Delta wood lathe all tooled up (Still have it) then purchased a small metal lathe, only to find that it was too small for doing much. So I then found a nice Jet 9x20 metal lathe on Craigslist and now have it all tooled up for pipe making. Including...

    Sound advice?

I've found that most times just heating the stem will bring it back to it's original size, as the rubber has somewhat of a memory. After heating the stem tends to fit snug again. If it doesn't I then go with the ice pick or drill bit method. If the stem is acrylic the, just heating method won't...

    Interested in pipe making.

Yep, in my opinion, a pre-bored block is the best way to start out. And as you were already told, you can do a lot with a dremel. That's how I got started. But then I got carried away and now have an entire shop dedicated to making pipes. But I've enjoyed every minute of it and continue too. I...

    Pipe Woods

With Walnut, it makes a decent enough pipe, but when your cutting and sanding it, make sure and wear a dust mask as the dust from Walnut is very toxic from what I understand. Hard on the lungs. Of course, you should do this with any wood unless your using a good dust collection system. I've...

    unfinished estate pipes

Nice rustication job......... It's not always easy to pull off a combination of Rustication and smooth but these two look good.

    Uncle Arthur Does it Again!!!!

Why house cleaning is a good idea

You know you've been smoking a pipe too long when...

You know you've been smoking a pipe too long when you take a puff and all that's left is the hot ash you just sucked into your mouth.......... Burning your tounge but you still can't wait to fill another bowl. :)

    It Pays To Know People

Always nice to have friends away from home. Especially if it's an area that you visit often. Sounds like you also found some considerate ones.

    ashtrays

I use my pipe tool and the palm of my hand. But every once in a while I'll loosen the ash and then put my thumb over the chamber. I then shake the pipe with the loose ash in it. This helps to evenly coat the inside of the bowl to aid in building an even cake.

    Textured chambers or smooth...pipe-makers?

When I make a pipe I don't go out of my way to rough up the inside of the bowl. I just drill it and leave it as is. Unless of course for some reason it would be extremely rough for some reason, then I'd sand and smooth it just a bit. But I'd still use a bit rougher sandpaper. I also do sand a...

    Nothing but Mario Grandi!

But where would be the variety? Even if they smoke good and are priced right I'd miss the variety I get by having pipes from other makers. :)

    couple pics

Yep, it's a Stanwell and appears it may be a bit older. How old, I'm not sure. Do a good alcohol cleanup and you should have a very good smoking pipe.

What's So Good About English Blends?

I started out as many new pipesmokers, thinking if they smelled good they would be good. So did aromatic blends for a few days. Then I tried my first English and have been a Latakia hound ever since. I love strong blends and mix in lighter blends from time to time. My only question would be...
