@ rothnh: what can I say, helping others is contagious. =] I don't know, maybe it is smoking too fast, but I really think it goes hand-in-hand with relights and tamping technique as much as with smoking too fast, at least in my limited experience. I found that my huffing and puffing was trying...- mick

It's definitely elusive. For me, the biggest "ah ha" was figuring out tamping. A week or two ago, I had my first 2 match smoke, from char to dottle (which has also all but disappeared for me whereas before it would be maybe 25%!).- mick

Got My Real Macarthur Pipe Today

I personally see no problems editing a kid's book for the sake of kids. I mean, what about the art of the book? The original Santa was a midget, so is changing Santa from a midget to a huge 6 foot plus lumbering man the same as burning books? If you read enough children's tales you will find...- mick

A couple of things. Make sure that you remove the filter each time AFTER the pipe has cooled and give the pipe a good going over with a fluffy pipe cleaner. Make sure you air out your filters completely. I assume you have a pack of 8. Maybe keep them in rotation if you want to smoke the pipe...- mick

And, in my humble opinion, as a new pipe smoker (me, not necessarily you), I find flakes really hard to smoke. I have tried a lot of different methods, but I find loose cut tobacco much more forgiving of the smoker's packing, lighting and tamping ability.- mick
