Bare wood or carbonization?
The "pre-carbonized" on pipes I've seen is just a coating. If you try the old "wet finger" or "honey finger" method on a new pipe, the coating comes off on your finger! Yes, I got a tin of #5 from Sutliff/Altadis last January. Out of the blue! I'm not a big English fan, but it immediately reminded me of the last Dunhill 965 that I had years ago (Murray). Mark seems to have had the same observation.- jimbo

Tired of losing pipe nails....
Yep, a WOODEN golf tee (not the plastic kind) makes a great tamper in a pinch, and they are cheap (I think... I'm not a golfer, I just find one occasionally.) Third Hand Smoke
Nearly two years ago, a local hospital went "no smoking" on their campus. Not only did they tear down their (unheated) "smoking shack" that was used by visitors and staff, they prohibited smoking IN PRIVATE CARS parked in the hospital parking lot! FDA Anti-Smoking messages.
What B.S.! And, not just on cigarettes. The US Smokeless Tobacco Co. has had to put a warning label covering up 50% of the top and sides of their snuff cans for the last couple of months.
