    Bare wood or carbonization?

The "pre-carbonized" on pipes I've seen is just a coating. If you try the old "wet finger" or "honey finger" method on a new pipe, the coating comes off on your finger! I've tried the 5 Brothers to break in, using the "1/3 full for a dozen smokes" followed by "half full", "3/4 full" etc. I...

    Center burn

Wow. Just one relight? Sometimes I have a DOZEN matches in my ashtray by the time I finish a bowl. I've noticed I can usually fire up a cob with a single light, but briars require one or two lights after the "charring light". I am self-taught also. I vowed I would NOT smoke like my late...

Has this ever happened to you?

Yes, I got a tin of #5 from Sutliff/Altadis last January. Out of the blue! I'm not a big English fan, but it immediately reminded me of the last Dunhill 965 that I had years ago (Murray). Mark seems to have had the same observation.

    Throwing away Tobacco

Don't get me wrong. Mixture 79 makes a great potpouri. It smells great in the pouch. JUST DON'T LET IT GET NEAR A MATCH>

Voters ban public smoking in San Angelo. Texas

nativeson said: "How about we take a lesson from the NRA? They are pretty good at "pushing back". Why are smokers SO disorganized? Their opponents are very organized, and they arn't just regulateing their neighbors who smoke. They are turning them into social outcast freaks, child poisioners...

    Throwing away Tobacco

You all have never thrown tobacco away? Something tells me you have never tried Mixture #79. :-)

    Tired of losing pipe nails....

Yep, a WOODEN golf tee (not the plastic kind) makes a great tamper in a pinch, and they are cheap (I think... I'm not a golfer, I just find one occasionally.) Anyway, I hardly ever lose a 95-cent aluminum pipe nail. I always have one in the change pocket of my pants, and scattered around the...

    The Pipe aka brylon

I gave "the pipe" (a black straight Dublin) to my dad for Christmas one year. I noticed he didn't smoke it very often compared to his "drugstore briars" and I wondered why. Years later, dad was gone, but "the pipe" was still here and since I was a pipe smoker myself by then, I tried it. Worst...

    First Pipe

I had been a cigar fan for years when something came over me and I bought my first pipe at a Fedmart supermarket when I was in college (circa 1975). It was a Missouri Meerschaum cob that was of a higher quality than they make now. It had a decent hard plastic black saddle bit (wide) and it...

    proposal: NATIONAL PIPE SMOKERS DAY

Thanks for the feedback. The original link worked when I tested it. I tried uploading to my Album here, but there is a size limit and my picture is 1000 pixels wide. So I tried PhotoBucket. I can't get the original size there either, but the 790 pixel image should give you a good idea...

    proposal: NATIONAL PIPE SMOKERS DAY

I have run this suggestion by a few guys and had mixed responses. To me, the biggest obstacle in promoting our pipe smoking hobby is getting a POSITIVE opinion of pipe smokers established with the PUBLIC. WE know we are a bunch of great guys and it's a great hobby, but that's preaching to the...

    Boycott List

I've boycotted TARGET stores for years. They made a big "to do" in the newspaper when they took all tobacco/smoking articles off their shelves chain-wide, several years ago. They ain't my mama. So, to hell with them. Jimbo

Voters ban public smoking in San Angelo. Texas

Election day this year saw a 30% voter turnout and a surprising (for both sides) 60% vote FOR Proposition #1, to ban public smoking in San Angelo, Texas. This will include all businesses including bars, restaurants, indoor and outdoor sports arenas and workplaces with more than one employee...

    Third Hand Smoke

Nearly two years ago, a local hospital went "no smoking" on their campus. Not only did they tear down their (unheated) "smoking shack" that was used by visitors and staff, they prohibited smoking IN PRIVATE CARS parked in the hospital parking lot! Wait, it gets better: Now, hospital employees...

    FDA Anti-Smoking messages.

What B.S.! And, not just on cigarettes. The US Smokeless Tobacco Co. has had to put a warning label covering up 50% of the top and sides of their snuff cans for the last couple of months. The "little" warnings have certainly not hampered my enjoyment of the leaf for the last 40 years. What...
