    Replacement Stems

I agree with bright and arthur. Even "standard" dimensions like on M-M cobs are variable. I purchased a couple of the Forever stems from Walker Briar Works for my cobs and they didn't fit. I sent them (with the pipes) back to Dave at Walker's who fit them for me, no extra charge. :worship:

Is there a proper way to smoke a bole?

All good tips. I can stretch most of my briars to 1.5 to 2 hours normally. It's either smoke fast and hot or relight a dozen times (yes, I do). I prefer the latter. I've also noticed smoking a fine-cut shag like 5 Brothers gets only about a 20 minute smoke in the same pipes I can smoke for...

    Corn Cobs

There used to be the story (was it an urban legend?) that the M-M cobs with a branding iron logo on the bottom were the good ones with the hardwood plug... and the ones with only a sticker on the bottom were not. True?

    An odd occurence.

What I'm wondering: Do they check turbans? How about looking under the veils of women?

    Pipe Babes

Alfalfa... I mean KEVIN... double-posted. His hands must be shaking thinking about Darla... I mean CYNTHIA. :laughat:

I am trying to post a picture of Bobby Kennedy here with a pipe..HELP!

    THAT'S Bobby Kennedy?? I'm not convinced. :?

    First Corncob....

Bogie, you're probably not doing anything "wrong", you are just developing your pipe "preferences". And the wood glue will probably not make you "sick", altho' the smell of Elmer's glue has always turned my stomach (a sour milk smell to me). After it dries, it can't be smelled. I do like cobs...

    Whats up with "friends"

Austrian? She looks German to me. (And the Munich-based Hofbrau Haus mug enforces the idea.)

    Panty Hose

ulsterpaddy said, "pantyhose...the gift that keeps on giving. A man had to invent them." Surely you jest, sir! Pantyhose on a woman is an ABOMINATION! Anything that is so hard to remove and serves as a barrier to your goal, could have only been invented by the same person that...

Life Magazine photos of men with pipes.

"... before the freehand movement", "... a more sane era". I agree whole-heartedly! Both men and pipes knew what the standards were. Sometimes it's hard to tell, these days. :?

    need help with cobs

sparroa, you show a very mature outlook for a "newby"! :D Only based on my personal experiences, I recommend trying cobs for all newbies to "get the hang" of pipesmoking and tobacco types before exploring briar and the other pipe materials. I shudder at the thought of somebody with no...

    Carter Hall

Some people swear by (not at) Carter Hall. I don't think it's as bad as all that, but I prefer Walnut more as a "drugstore" blend. As for Prince Albert, it burns the hell out of me.

Biting The Tongue That Feeds You

I guess it's just the physics of it. Like when you start a fire, you use some fine wood shavings which burns fast and hot to ignite the larger kindling. Then the kindling ignites the big log on top which burns slowly.

    Blends That Ghost?

I keep an old Big Ben I've had for years as my "Erinmore" pipe. Besides Erinmore, I also smoke 1792 in it (it's tonquin flavoring can ghost). I like 4noggins' Mojo (w/deer tongue) but I keep it restricted to my aromatic-dedicated pipes because of the vanilla flavor of the deer tongue can stay...

    need help with cobs

Cobs are much faster to break in than briars. They smoke cooler and drier too. The main gripe with the cobs I have are their narrow bowl diameter. I solved that by drilling out the bowls on my "Egg" and "Spool" to be comparable to the diameter of most of my briars. (My "rule of thumb"... I can...

    I smoke outside...

I live alone in my family ranch home. My dad smoked here. My grandad smoked here. Nobody is telling me I can't smoke here. Did I mention I was single? I am proud to be a pipe smoker and nobody is going to tell me to use the garage which reminds me of sneaking a smoke behind the barn...

    Smoking correctly?

You are right, there is moisture in the tobacco... more than you think. Last night I smoked some 1792 that almost crumbled to dust when I rubbed it out (or cracked it up, rather). It had been in an open tin for nearly a year. By the time it was smoked down to the bottom, it seemed "normal" as...

    Thoughts on "giant" pipes?

bubba, I found a pipe similar to yours, also in a flea market/antique shop. It was a smooth bent BBB with vulcanite stem. I tried smoking it once... took about an ounce of 'baccy to fill. I finally sold it to a dealer for several times what I paid for it, and heard it found its way into giant...

    pipe rack purchase

I got ALL my pipe racks "second hand" at flea markets, etc. Yes, some have holes, some have slots, and you may be finding yourself delegating certain pipes to whichever rack holds them better. One of the racks I like best was a circular one that holds 8 pipes. It was a "holes" type, which I...
