I picked up a box/pouch of carter hall becasue it was cheap and the only thing in the smoke shop i hadn't tried. I must say that this is truly the worst blend I have ever smoked. Yeah it was cheap, but it's still not worth buying here's why:
1.No flavor at all, tastes like burning newspaper.

2.Although it's cheap, newspaper is cheaper so it's not cheap by comparison. also you can get sir walter raleigh aromatic for the same price which is better.

3.It smells bad on your clothes later. like dirty motor oil.
just my opinion.

Wow, spacecowboy! Why don't you open up and tell me what you really think?.. :?...I'm sorry to hear that the CH didn't trip your trigger....but I wouldn't throw it away yet. While it's true that our tastes are all different, you may find that this tobacco at a different time in a different pipe will come across as more acceptable to you. Anyhow...thanks for your opinion!

Some people swear by (not at) Carter Hall.
I don't think it's as bad as all that, but I prefer Walnut more as a "drugstore" blend.
As for Prince Albert, it burns the hell out of me.

Rat's Hilo beat me too it.

You might try Half and Half... but not from the pouch. The 14 oz. tub (to me) is much, much better.
Shhhhhh.... don't tell anybody but I don't like CH either....

For "drugstore " brands Sir Walter Raleigh is my all time favorite followed by Half and Half. Carter Hall is OK if there is nothing else available.

I bought a pouch of CH a couple months ago and while it didn't tickle my fancy, my dad loved it! So I gave him the pouch and a couple pipes. I still see him puffing away on the same ouch every once and awhile.
I too am in the PA fan base... great OTC blend!

I like Carter Hall but I get it in the tub , For the burley fix in all of us .It also makes a good blender . It goes well with fall weather . The pouch and the tub are two differant animals .

Carter Hall - Too bland to my taste

Prince Albert - Got bored with it

Half & Half - Just ok

Rum & maple - Another just ok
Sugar Barrel - Hits the spot when I want burley, schmokes dry, schmells good too.

Sir Walter Raleigh - Close second to Sugar Barrel
I've got a pouch each of Ch,PA, H&H and R&M anyone want them ? lemmeno

I smoke a lot of drugstore blends but CH is to bland for me, it is better in the tub as I have found true with all drugstore blends. My fav. are Prince Albert, Half and Half, and Sir Walter. I can't forget about The Capt. in the white pouch another go to. I haven't tried Sugar barrel but will have to try it.

Carter Hall was one of the tobaccos I started with 50+ years ago. I liked it then but when I went back to the pipe, I got into things like Dunhill, Lane, McCelland's and a few others. About four or five monthe ago, I decided to give CH another try after reading some reviews and bought a pouch. I found I still liked it as a change of pace and bought a tub of it and PA. I use the PA as a blender but have dedicated my two new Mark Twain's to CH. If all other tobaccos were to fall off the edge of the world, I could do just fine with Carter Hall.

Wow I guess I was a bit harsh... anyway i've tried prince albert and think it's great for the money but I prefer Sir Walter Raleigh aromatic. Either way I just got a shipment of shortcut to mushrooms and old toby for my stockpile so I'm not so bummed about the carter hall anymore.
