August 2010 - What are you smoking?

Ready for it? 1Q! I had a TAD attack this morning in Portland, and got myself a couple of ounces of it along with a new pipe. It's a Vauen, 1/4 bent Rhodesian (I think that's the right name for the shape). New pipe, new tobacco. Life is good. The 1Q was an easy, easy smoke. Flavorful, and...

August 2010 - What are you smoking?

Last night was sitting back in a lawn chair as the sky got dark with a bowlful of Mac Baren Plumcake in a beat up Dr. Grabow Omega. Was watching for northern lights, but the sky wasn't clear enough. The smoke was good, but the pipe (an estate, cleaned) has a VaPer ghost in it. Will have to see...

Made My Own Pipe in Denmark

That's a great looking pipe. More than a little in common with my Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen, even the stain color. Congratulations on getting it so right on your first shot. Now, stop trolling eBay for used woodworking equipment. Simon

Pipes: What\'s the Difference? (Newbie Needs Help!)

Welcome BostonBill (and rybo, too, while I'm at it!), Once you've got the basics down in materials and pipe design, the devil's in the details. I've managed to collect a few pipes, and they all have their own personalities, regardless of price. They ranged from $250 at one end and $5 for two...

    Drug store tobacco group

caliguy, that's a pretty interesting observation. Around here, there's NO SUCH THING as "drug store" pipe tobacco. Drug stores stock cigarettes (a million different brands) and nothing else. Call it a strange side effect of legislation, but the only place to get pipe tobacco (excepting online)...

    No, there's a thread for that! :-) http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/show-us-your-tobacco-stash Simon

    Smoking Outside Time

It was a beautiful evening here tonight. Sat out with my wife on the deck and let the sky grow dark while sending curls of smoke up into it. Why can't every night be as perfect as that? Simon

Carnival Cruise Lines to Ban Smoking in Smoking Lounges

Seems to me that cruises would be catering to the same demographics that are typically cigar and pipe smokers. But isn't Carnival the one that's trying to get a younger demographic? Not that I'm in the market for cruises, but I think I heard that. Oh well. There are other cruise lines to take...

July 2010 - What are you smoking?

PS Black Currant Cavendish. The smokes have been few and far between lately, but every time I do, I find myself reaching for this blend. Only about one more bowl left. I'm heading to the states next weekend, and I'll be hunting high and low for it. Simon

    Smoking Outside Time

Around here, summer (and especially summer evenings) are the best for smoking outside. Calm, warm temps and tonight an almost-full moon rising in the southeast. It's the pleasant lull before the frigid, wet and windy winter. Simon

July 2010 - What are you smoking?

I agree with Hobie1dog's sentiments, if not his substance... Thanks for the interesting and thorough account of yor smoke, Phil. Myself, it's Peter Stokkebye Black Currant Cavendish in a newly-refurbished Dr. Grabow Grand Duke estate that came with the rack I won on eBay a couple of weeks back...

List Your Other Hobbies / Interests

Tried to edit my post to add the picture, but I was too slow, apparently. This was taken of me with the bike at North Central Motorsports Park. Wringing it out on the quarter mile was lots of fun on those street-legal Friday nights. Simon

List Your Other Hobbies / Interests

Those white '93s are nice looking bikes. Back in the day, I thought Hondas were a little boring. However, next to all of the bikes the Japanese are selling these days, it looks like a million bucks. My goal is to find a clean 93-95 Kawasaki ZX7 and restore it to like-new condition. That was and...

Frog Morton on the Town in my Stanwell HCA Churchwarden. An afternoon smoke! Unprecedented for me. Simon

    Denmark Bound

I'm really looking forward to the Mac Baren factory photos and video. I think almost everything in my stash is either McClelland or Mac Baren. For those who are curious, I made that choice because it was easier to find things on TobaccoReviews.com if I just stuck to the M's. ;-) Simon

    Repairing a cracked stem?

Since I'm not finished the restoration yet (haven't got my hands on a reamer yet--maybe today), I don't really know how it smokes. Judging from the nature and position of the crack, I don't expect that it will have any other effect than leading to the stem being loose someday if it gets worse...

    Repairing a cracked stem?

Hi all, I'm finally back in town and am setting about refurbishing the couple of Dr. Grabows that I won off of eBay a few weeks ago. Overall, the pipes are in decent shape; in need of a cleaning and a reaming, but I'm on top of that. Lots of advice to be found here and elsewhere on the 'net. The...

July 2010 - What are you smoking?

My first pipe in a week and a half: PS Black Currant Cavendish in my Brigham apple. I'm surprised I can remember how to operate the matches. Simon
