    My tobacco stash

There's just something about seeing all those tins together that gets the TAD revving. I know bulk blends are cheaper and good substitutes in a lot of cases, but... The tins! The tins! One of my faves in there: Plumcake. Simon

October 2010 - What are you smoking?

W.O. Larsen Limited Edition 2010 in my Dr Grabow Omega. Was a good, satisfying smoke. Didn't really ring any bells, though. One thing I will say about sampling all these different types of tobacco: I'm really starting to feel confident in my blend choices. When I like one, I know it. Simon

    Snobbery....

All pipes look the same in the dark. Simon

Welcome New Members. Introduce Yourself. (2)

I've got that exact pipe, except rusticated. Got it as an estate off of eBay. After cleaning, I noticed that the draw hole was not very well drilled, meaning that it was difficult to get a good draw on the pipe. So I took matters into my own hands and now this pipe is a really good smoker. I...

October 2010 - What are you smoking?

The sampling continues. This time, it's Peterson's University Flake (again in the Vauen). Trying something outside my comfort zone. I've never found a blend with burley that I really liked. Rubbed it out... and I found myself tapping this out at about the 10 minute mark. Was strong, and a...

October 2010 - What are you smoking?

Butterscotch Love from Just For Him in my Vauen 1/2 bent Rhodesian. Yet another from the box, this one (of many) donated by hobie1dog. Sweet, not very memorable. Simon

Welcome New Members. Introduce Yourself. (2)

Nope. Lots of Dr. Grabows and other lower-cost pipes out there. My first was $50 Canadian for a Brigham 1-dot. Welcome to the forum! Take your time and soak up all the good info here. Simon

September 2010 - What are you smoking? Vol. II

Rattray's Marlin Flake (thanks for the recommendation, Phil!) in my Stanwell HCA churchwarden. Was a very nice smoke. Would have been better to take it a bit slower in retrospect, but it's not an easy pipe to smoke and I was in the dark, staring up at a sky full of stars. Simon

    Musicians on the Forums

I've hesitated throwing my hat in the ring in this thread, because the definition of musician is flexible. I don't have any pretensions about being in a band or even going to an open mic night, but I do pick up one of my guitars and/or the drumsticks every day. On the odd occasion that I have...

September 2010 - What are you smoking? Vol. II

Lane RLP-6 from THE BOX... (maniacal laughter) In my Vauen 1/2 bent rhodesian. Not bad, but not a keeper. I prefer 1Q. Simon

    Lord of the Rings

My dad had a copy, and I remember reading a few pages of it when I was in my early teens, but it didn't stick. It's an interesting insight into the 1960's, where there actually was a backlash against the popularity of a book. Not just the popularity of the book, but its infiltration into other...

    Lord of the Rings

You know what I'd really like? A thread that summarized and/or reviewed all of the tobacco blends that have Lord of the Rings inspired names. I just noticed pstlpkr smoking "Ruins of Isengard". I mean, how cool-sounding is that? Is it Longbottom Leaf that has been casket-aged while floating in...

    MATCHES!

I started with matches, but was getting frustrated with the amount of "work" involved. Got a dedicated pipe lighter and used that for a while, but I ended up switching back to matches. I just liked the flame better. Gives me a light that I can judge better. Means fewer relights in the long run...

Which side of the mouth do you put your pipe?

Probably more often on the left, but a mix. Left keeps my sword hand free. ;-) Simon

    Enjoy!!!!

Very neat. I'm going to sift through that. A fun look at a bygone age. Simon

    First Pipe today...advice ?

Welcome reddazes. Don't stress out trying to get it right. It's trial and error. There's lots of great info here, but it all boils down to the individual and a few simple rules. Don't pack it too tight or too loose. If you are puffing too hard, your tongue will hurt. :-) After that it's up to...

September 2010 - What are you smoking? Vol. II

CAO Eileen's Dream in a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke mini-chruchwarden. Worked out pretty well: even though I was in the garage due to the rain outside, my wife wanted to talk and so kept me company. Was her choice of 'baccy. Simon

PAD causes fiance to start smoking pipes... help.

It was just the day before yesterday that I was talking with my wife (after she'd packed me a pipe with Eileen's Dream) that there had only been three or so females on the board in my experience, so it's nice to see that number increase by one immediately after! Penguin, it's happened and now...

    Pipe In Background?

Straight, saddle bit, maybe a billiard. I'd say that your friend smoked one to two bowls of Sir Walter Raliegh per week, usually while enjoying a cup of dark coffee, black. Has a predilection for collecting antiquities, and has a deep interest in abnormal psychology. Simple deduction, Watson.

Who had a real paper route when they were a kid?

I had a paper route. The local daily paper, the Victoria Times-Colonist. Held that down for just over a year when I was 14. Had to get up at five every morning to get them delivered before seven. Was a good experience and part of the job was collecting the money every two weeks. That was the...
