    Newly Refurbished YB Jumbo Pipe

So I fired up the pipe and spent an hour with it out in the shop. It's got a good draft and the tobacco burns evenly and cool. You really get a mouthful of flavor with these big pipes. It is going to need a salt an alcohol treatment because my PS Balkan Supreme was being frightened out the bowl...

    Newly Refurbished YB Jumbo Pipe

I've got to make room in my shop for a recent influx of old briar for restoration, so I finished up this old Yello-Bole Imperial. This is one of the better looking pipes of this kind I've come across with sharp stampings and a smokey looking grain I like. I'll put leaf and fire in it tomorrow.

    Cooke #4

That poker is my favorite! I have nothing like that yet. Someday. @crimsonrat, I have seen the terms rusticated and sandblasted used interchangeably so I understand the confusion. Maybe somebody will clarify. Can rustication apply to both carved and sandblasted?

    Today's Antique Store Run

@fishbanjo, $55.00 would be too much for an estate pipe for me as well. These were eight bucks each. While I really don't need them, I'll have fun refurbing them and selling them someday. I'm thinking the Arlington will be the only one I end up keeping. I'm a sucker for silver bands :-)

    Today's Antique Store Run

I met my quota at my first stop of the day, a local shop. As the proprietress was ringing them up she noted they had been selling a lot of pipes and racks recently. Noooooo!!! What have I missed? Well, here's what I got. Nothing exceptionally special, but still exciting stuff for me. They are...

    Security Asked Me To Move

For sure, I would have lit up my pipe right next to her in a spirit of solidarity. She probably would have reported me though.

    Quiet night

I don't get off work until after midnight so it takes awhile for me to get here and see what's been going on. Trailboss, it's a good thing you happened to glance at the date! My wife and I met in high school back in 1972. A mutual friend played a prank on her and told her I liked her. I...

    Ebay for Newbies

Great advice has been given, but allow me to add my slightly different perspective. If you enjoy restoring estate pipes or might want to venture into this hobby sometime your strategy might be just a bit different than if you shopping for a ready to smoke pipe in good condition. I look for...

    Transferring Tobacco into Pipe Pouch?

Transfers are done aseptically in an USP 797 Iso 5 environment. Make sure the single use sterile tongs get first air from the HEPA filter. :-)

    Burnt Rims and Wanton Violence

Awwww, I think it's an interesting observation about behavior. I see similar posts in classical musician forums about violin players who let too much rosin accumulate on the fingerboards. Sure, in the larger scheme of human events it's a small concern, but it's still something to ponder.

Ha ha! I didn't even need Google Translate for that!

    Falcon

The biggest problem I have with mine is clenching. There is not much there to grab onto and they are very light. I keep flipping the pipe up and flinging ash in my face. Other than that I sort of enjoy them.

    Becoming a Dad

From my own experience, it's like a rollercoaster ride, fun and terrifying, but mostly fun. Savor every moment, because time will now seem to speed up. Maybe keep a journal or blog of your days of learning to be a dad for your child to read as an adult. Good advice about taking care of mom...

    Burnt Rims and Wanton Violence

I'm not sure what generalizations can be made from those who don't take care of their stuff. I gave one of my sons an estate pipe I had carefully restored. One day I noticed him banging it on the concrete patio after a smoke. I wasn't pleased and got on his case about it. He didn't even notice...

    Location,location,location

I've used both my smartphone and a dedicated GPS on my last vacation to New Mexico. The phone GPS is ok if you remember to download the maps beforehand and not rely on having cell towers being available wherever you go. The other downside was the GPS, data connection and screen constantly on was...

A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

okiescout wrote: Well, I sure wasn't around then so I can't speak with any authority. You may be right. But there are plenty of sources on the Net to indicate most Americans didn't think much of the Japanese before the War. This quote is from a Wikipedia article on anti-Japanese sentiment...

A Date Which Will Live in Infamy

@johnnyreb I think those were dangerous times. All the major powers were building up their military forces. Much like now, fear and paranoia could be used to enact laws and policies which could not otherwise get by congress and leaders used that to full advantage. Of course, the world economy...
