On the cruise ship there were designated smoking areas, just a few, top side 3rd deck, outside. Everywhere else was "No Smoking" with clear signs stating such.
My wife and I were at the pool, 2nd deck. Sitting 3 deck chairs from me was a woman smoking. She sat directly in front of the "No Smoking" sign. Being one who recognizes the right to smoke has been violated over the years, but yet I follow the laws/rules via smoking, I expect that other smokers do the same. So I politely told the woman she was smoking in a "No Smoking" area, and I pointed to the sign behind her, just in case she overlooked it. She gave me a shitty look, and took another puff. Two more times I politely asked her if she understood the sign, she was of Spanish decent and speaking Spanish to a woman next to her. I was not sure if she understood the sign. I was giving her the benefit of doubt. She continued giving me that nasty look, all the while puffing away. My wife saw that I was beginning to get a bit angered over the insolence of this woman and told me to never mind, and sit down. We would have moved to another area, but all of the deck chairs by the pool were taken.
In a few moments the woman and her friend walked away. About ten minutes later security walks over to me, the smoking woman was with him. He asked me if I had told the woman to stop smoking. I said I did. He told me that was not the proper thing to do and that I should have instead told security. He then told me that my wife and i had to move away from where the woman was sitting. I almost blew a gasket. I said to the security guy. "I'm not the one smoking in a non designated area. Why should I move?" This time he said that the woman thought I was being racist, and even if I was not, he could not take any chances.
My wife and I had to leave the pool side because there were no chairs available. And the smoking woman went back to her comfortable lounge chair.
