    Where Do You Usually Smoke?

Not indoors, due to spousal objections. When the weather is cold, as it is today, I crank up my Jeep, turn on the heat and open a window. Been doing this since ‘97. Today it’s Boswell’s Christmas Cookie in a Bari Pearl brandy glass. Yes, I wear a seatbelt. It’s a good habit to have.

The Quality of Tinned V Bulk tobacco.

I believe blenders put the same stuff in bags or tins — but you are likely to find differences between blends over time regardless of packaging. A good many years ago I loved Lane’s Crown Achievement. To me, it was second in flavor and quality only to Bengal Slices. Time passed and I focused on...

    My Fifth Pfizer Shot

4 Modernas and 1 Pfizer. I’ve never had Covid as far as I know. Nor has my long suffering wife. Two years ago I lost my big sis to Covid. She was schizophrenic so it’s impossible to say whether she would have taken the vaccine, but none were available when she died. I don’t know why anyone does...

    Pipe Varnish is Peeling

Very nice. I’ve had as many as a dozen Irish Seconds at a time. They smoke as well as most any other Pete. More often they’re sold as seconds because the flaws in the briar required more putty than Peterson could tolerate. And they do have more tolerance for the stuff than many. I once had a...

The best sound I've heard in a while

Gaslight. One of my all-time top 5's.

    English “problems”

I nearly pitched my first ever bowl of Latakia out the window after the first 2 or 3 puffs. It was just so different from what I had been accustomed to, and I didn't see how anyone could stand the stuff. But I stuck with it as I hate wasting things. Halfway through the bowl my mind was opened...

What Are You Drinking? December 2022

I've had a bottle of this stuff sitting on my bar for several years. I'm not sure why I bought it or why I've never opened it. Over Thanksgiving my older son asked me what the plan was for it. I shrugged and popped it open. I'm not an experienced single malt drinker. And while I found this...

    Peterson Irish Army

Quite nice... Dublins are a great shape and a natural for Peterson. Congrats

Pipe Lighter - Leads and Recommendations

I hate pipe lighters. Fiddly, unreliable things -- and compared to the cost of matches, the economics of quality lighters are completely upside down. These however I didn't know existed. Will give them a try.

    Drying the Tobacco?

Aros are notoriously goopy. I really try to smoke just as it comes from whatever container it happens to be in, but when you can pretty much squeeze a tobacco out into a shot glass it's time for a little dry time. I just spread it out on a paper towel and forget about it for a half day or...

    Is this worth repairing?

A search for bite repair on the blog Reborn Pipes will return a number of examples. I appreciate Steve's blog because he takes a plethora of meticulous photographs of each repair.

Tobacco Presents from Santa—What to Get?

I hate to be repetitious, as I shared this in another thread, but perhaps a Boswell's Christmas Cookie will fill the bill. For me, it's a once or twice a year holiday treat, as I'm not much of an aromatic smoker. But it's certainly festive. (Peeking out from behind the jar is a Peterson...

    Compromised Tins

No rust issues here but, if I may (while we're on the topic of compromised, or soon to be, tins).... Rummaging through the cellar earlier this week, I noted that three of my tins are getting bulgy. That's especially the case with my one tin of Star of the East Flake, which I'm convinced will...

    Do Stingers really work

I can testify that you don't notice them when they're gone.

    Show Off Your Petersons Here!

I’d wanted a Darwin for ages. I finally managed to snag one in a 2020 Christmas pipe. The ferrule, which is copper plated nickel, is showing a nice patina but I suspect the plating isn’t long for this world. It’s definitely wearing through. All considered I’d prefer sterling silver. The pipe...

What Is Your Favorite "Manly" Poem?

The Betrothed Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936) “You must choose between me and your cigar.” Breach of Promise Case, circa, 1885 OPEN the old cigar-box, get me a Cuba stout, For things are running crossways, and Maggie and I are out. We quarrelled about Havanas—we fought o’er a good cheroot, And I...

    Sutliff Christmas Spice...Christmasy indeed

I'm not much of an aromatic smoker, but honorable mention at least must be given to Boswell's Christmas Cookie. Boswell's description follows: "Christmas Cookie was one of the First blends Dan Boswell Created in November of 2002, Dan worked on this blend for 7 months to get it just right for...

    Pipes With Bamboo Shanks?

My humble single knuckle bamboos smoke just fine. One is a Bari apple with a curved shank. But Nording "Beaver" Hunter Series pipe is among my best smokers. Honestly, though, I can't say I recognize any difference in smoking properties between bamboo and non-bamboo. Still, it looks cool.

    Pearl Harbor Day

My aunt -- my Dad's older brother's wife -- was the daughter of a Pearl Harbor survivor. As a young boy, I recall meeting him in his retirement, a former USN Captain. My uncle had met his wife while attending the US Naval Academy. As it happened, my youngest granddaughter was born five years...

    Dishonorable Mentions

There may be a way to smoke Borkum Riff Whiskey without feeling as if you've been bitten by a rabid dog, but I don't know how. It was the first tobacco I ever tried and I've no idea how or why I chose to continue. There was no internet in those days, and it was easy to remain ignorant of the...
