Sometimes They Don’t Need Breaking In

In decades, only this pipe has smoked beautifully from the first puff. Although I bought it new sometime in the late 90's, it never needed any break in and returns a great, consistent smoke no matter what tobacco I use. And I've smoked it with just about everything. Upshall P grade.

    School me on Lakeland Tobacco

Yes, I would call them "floral." I managed to score a bulk bag of Bosun's Cut Plug from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. I think the aroma's awesome. On the other hand, the nicotine hit is definitely beyond my comfort zone which has been nurtured on low-nic Latakia. They do tend to ghost your pipes pretty...

    11 year old Penzance.

I've a couple of 8 year old tins that should be worth exploring. I noted earlier this week that a few of my older sealed tins (not Penzance) are bulging top and bottom. I've been curious as to what's going on in there. There's definitely something up.

    The dreaded demise.......

Tobacco blend availability has always seemed pretty volatile to me. Some remain in production for decades, regardless of whether that's a good thing (e.g., Borkum Riff Whiskey which I remember, not fondly, from my youth). Others change ownership from time to time (for example, Dunhill blends...

When to buy a high grade pipe

FWIW at the price range you're considering it's possible to commission a unique pipe to your specifications. I've purchased four such over the past couple of decades, beginning with this one from Paul Bonaquisti. (He now spells his name "Bonacquisti," but as you can see from the pipe sock that...

What Does Your Scene Look Like?

It's gotten too cold to smoke outdoors, so here's a shot from the summer. My generator is usually the centerpiece of my view. Oftentimes a chipmunk keeps me company.

    Pipe Smoking and Retirement

Congrats... I'm about 4 years from retirement and can't imagine it. Wife wants to travel. I've traveled for business for so many years the thought of doing so "for fun" is the farthest thing from my mind. Smoke in peace.

    Your Cellar Size

My tobacco cellar represent obsession much more than strategy. At a wild guess, 75 pounds -- which is vastly more than I need, but not as much as I want. Here's one small part of it.

    Showoff Your Dunhill Pipes Here!

1969 Bruyere group 2 prince. When I bought it -- somewhere around 25 years ago -- there was a hairline crack on the shank (disclosed by the seller). I gave it to the late Dick Silverman, who sent it off to American Smoking Pipe Co. for a sterling silver band. It's a bit tarnished, and it does...

    Desert Island Tobacco

Bengal Slices, but not the contemporary stuff. From back in the day… the black rectangular tins with slices of tobacco wrapped in gleaming gold foil. Or maybe BBB by the late Dick Silverman of Chief Catoonah’s. I still have maybe 6 ounces of that irreplaceable tobacco left in a jar. But since...

    Pipe tobacco in a humidor?

My humble ABS humidor holds my small stock of cigars and two pouches that I've had for about two dozen years. The Condor was purchased on a business trip to the UK. I honestly don't know why I've elevated this pouch to memorial status. The Balkan Sobranie I understand. I actually smoked about...

pipe shops in Chattanooga/Knoxville/Gatlinburg that arnt listed in the directory?

It seems pretty comprehensive to this former East Tennesseean, but it's been a while. I do think Gatlin Burlier is worth a stop, although you have to elbow aside all manner of non pipe related gimcracks to browse properly. And they don't have a smoker's lounge as I recall. Still, worthwhile...

Well ... I Ruined the Finish on this Grabow

Nice outcome. I'd call it a day and just smoke it. FWIW, whatever Dr G uses for a finish coat seems to come off easily enough with just rubbing alcohol, although I've only done that with smooth finished pipes. I had an Omega once that showed quite a nice grain after a good alcohol rub. It was a...
