    Four Commissions

For no particular reason, I'm posting the four pipes I've commissioned over the years. In the first picture, they're: 1) Paul Bonaquisti Ruvido in a "Canadian Prince" shape from 1998. The bowl was designed after an Ashton prince owned by a friend of mine. 2) Bill Boyle re-interpreting the same...

Best Refillable Lighter-- Xikar, IM Corona or Peterson?

Xikar may be considered a soft flame, although not compared to a Zippo. But I really disliked that lighter. It required constant fiddling and would often just fail to perform. I haven't used the others.

    Show Us Your Savinelli Pipes!

I've never seen another of these: a Savinelli Autograph Second. The stem has the typical Autograph swirl, but a different logo. It takes the Savinelli balsawood filters.

    Zippo pipe lighter wick

I filled my lighter last night, gave it a light and saw a burst of flame spread quickly throughout the lighter. My hands aren't steady and fluid had leaked out. Also, the wick was way too long. I snipped it back a little and now it's just right. FWIW.

Samuel Gawith Flakes are Hard to Smoke

This thread gave me a hankering for Navy Flake. This batch is 8 years old and pretty dry, but smokes like a dream.

    Sorry Dunhill, I don’t get you…

Alfred Dunhill was a great marketer. He differentiated Dunhills in the early years by offering a one year guarantee. This meant he had to work out a way of gauging how old a pipe was once it was sold. As a result, Dunhill is one of the few companies whose product can be dated back to the early...

    Show Off Your Bulldogs/Rhodesians

I'll share this Upshall that's been kicking around in my cabinets for 25 years or more. It's stamped "Extra Large" and indeed fits the bill. With the square shank I'm not exactly sure where it fits into the Bulldog pantheon shape wise, but the bowl is certainly bulldog inspired. Back in the 90's...

    "Gateway" English Blends

Squadron Leader when you can find it. It’s what I call a mild, full English. A different approach altogether is an English aromatic. I like Sillem’s Black. It’s a completely non goopy aromatic with Latakia. You can usually find it in stock.

    Show Me Those Paneled Pipes!

Sorry for the poor photo, but it took me hours to install LEDs in this bowl. This shape is — I think — best described as a panel skater. What say you?

    Great Photos Thread

I snapped this photo through the window of a black cab just because I happened to see a tobacconist in the City of London as I passed by. There's something about the accidental composition that I like... it's the people captured in mid-gait. There are two images. The first is much more engaging...

    Inflation.

Three years into pandemic-disrupted supply chains, and I'm still seeing shortages here in PA of staple supplies at our nearest big box buy-it-in-bulk store. Things like eggs I understand, what with Avian flu outbreaks. But why is it suddenly so hard to buy milk? A couple of years ago, there was...

    What are Your Hobbies?

For years, Jeeps weren't a hobby. They were a necessary form of transportation. Now, truth be told, mi esposa and I generally find that her Lexus SUV is more than enough for us to get around in, with me working from home 100%. She's been out of the workforce since 1993. I won't give these two...

    Pipe Brand

The logo is familiar, but I can't place it. If the pipe is stamped with a country of manufacture, you can try searching it here: English index - Pipes : Logos & Markings - http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/index-en.html. Click on the appropriate country flag and drill down from there. Sorry I...

    Why so different?

Packing & mindset. Some days, I'm just not in the mood. I'm restless, fretting, I won't be able to sit in contemplation as I must do when puffing. Worst of all, I might be interrupted. It has to be the right time, and I must practice technical excellence in packing. The latter I can better control.
