My experience matches radio807's. Butane lighters (for me, an Old Boy) taste the best, and I can usually find a still place to get my pipe lit. Pop into the garage, up against a wall, etc. If I'm going out, and just don't want to mess with it, I gas up the Zippo.- lyle

Half a Bowl?
As long as the bowl still tastes good, yes, I'd advise dumping the ash and relighting. Depending on what tobacco is being smoked, sometimes the last bits are the tastiest. I agree with mmjk in that you shouldn't take it too seriously, but I also don't think there's anything wrong with working...- lyle

Identifying This Pipe
A friend of mine who collects Custombilts, who is not a member of this forum, asked me to pass this on. "He has a Caroleer manufacurted by Custombilt pipe company, made from Mountain Laurel from the carolinas during world war two when briar was hard to get." Hope that helps! -

Oxidation Removel
+1 on oxyclean. I used it for the first time on a really old, nasty estate pipe, and it came out very clean (but matte/dull). Followed by Brebbia pipe polish, lots of hard rubbing, and Obsidian oil, it's good as new.- lyle
