    Sterilizing a pipe

Opinions differ, mine is that both types of alcohol are fine. One thing to consider is that, depending on where you live, the isopropyl alcohol maybe available in much higher concentration than the ethanol (everclear). Some states don't allow pure grain spirits and your everclear may not be...

    Briar Books Press Is Awesome

I just purchased and received the latest offering from Briar Books Press. While I haven't had time to read the book yet, I did have fun poring over the free gift he included. How cool! Quoted from briarbooks.com, "As a special treat, be one of the first 200 orders received by December 14th...

Let's Have Some Fun! Tobaccos You HATE!

I can honestly say there hasn't been a blend yet that I really hated. The only tobacco that I didn't finish was a pouch of Captain Black Gold... didn't hate it, just got tired of that vanilla smell so I gave it away. I've tried to blend some of my own from component tobaccos, and some of those...

    Breaking in a new pipe

All the break-in rituals can be fun (honey coating, quarter bowls, etc.), and I have done most of them in the past to no bad effect. These days I am a little lazier, but I still get nervous about "doing it right." Whenever I'm looking at a brand new pipe, and I want permission to just smoke...

    Medical alcohol swab

If I had both available, I'd use the ethanol every time. However, if the choice was isopropyl or nothing at all, I wouldn't think twice about using the medical alcohol. Just be sure to let it evaporate thoroughly before you smoke it or put it in your mouth. As Joe said, this can be a...

    B&M over Internet

Another consideration is that I want my B&M to be there when I need it for "emergencies" (run out of pipe cleaners, lighter fluid, etc.). Whenever I go in there for any reason, I always buy at least a tin of something, even though I can get better prices online.

I cant believe I just did this!.. yes I AM STUPID!

Don't be too hard on yourself. Misery loves company, so If it makes you feel any better, last night I was cleaning an old Boswell pipe, and I got the cotton end of a q-tip stuck in the draft hole. While forcing/ramming it through, I chipped a nice chunk out of the inside chamber wall. Ugh.

Am I a hypocrite to my child?

As a parent, I know it is complicated. I agree with the advice about being honest with your kid and setting a good example for moderation, but I don't know what age that should happen. My kids are too young to have that talk, so for now I hide it from them (which isn't hard--they go to bed at...

    Pipe Spotting

I've tried smoking while doing something "active" a couple times, like shoveling snow. it always goes badly. I either inhale by accident and choke, drool down the stem, or exhale through the pipe and shoot embers everywhere.

    Pleasant new hobby

Welcome! If there's one thing I've learned, pipe smokers in general are nice, generous people. Smarter people than me will have good advice for you, but I just wanted to say: have fun!

    Pipe Spotting

Thanks for the welcome messages, guys! I only recently discovered these forums, and I'm glad I did! @Lawrence: I certainly have no problem with a repost. The photo isn't mine, just a link to the Des Moines Register web site. @olewaylon: Cool, another Des Moines pipe smoker! As for what the...

    Stressed...... Irishsmoker

I had a perspective similar to the military one. In my case, I treated it like my house was in some kind of natural disaster--it made it easier to let go of some of the "small stuff" and make sure the most important stuff got taken care of, a kind of triage. In my honest opinion, this stage...

    What are You Reading?

"Winesburg, Ohio" by Sherwood Anderson. It was recommended to me as an American analog of James Joyce's "Dubliners." A lofty expectation, for sure, but so far living up to it.
