Seeking Suggestions - Best Pipe For A Quick Smoke

    Dunhill Crosby #2

    My First Peterson

I got my first Peterson in 1958 or 59. Great billiard. average size. It cost $18 new. A #4 Dunhill had cost me $22, so the Pete was an expensive pipe. Far better than what they make now.

    Famous pipe smokers

There was a picture in todays Times of Kurt Weil smoking a pipe.

    E. Wilke Pipes - What Do I Have Here? (Pic heavy)

Fluffie: The Wilke sisters were probably born in the 1880s. When I knew them in the 50s they were about 70 years old. So there must have been an intermediary owner, possibly one of their descendants.

    E. Wilke Pipes - What Do I Have Here? (Pic heavy)

I used to hang out in the Wilke Pipe Shop in the 1950s. It was on Madison Ave. What distinguished their pipes was a complete lack of finish. No stain, wax or varnish. The Wilke sisters, who were the daughters of the founder, ran the place. The business was sold much later to the proprietor of...

Would you buy a new Cavicchi?

Absolutely not. I bought one once, a beautifully carved Oom Paul. The taste of the stain was intolerable. I removed most of it, but hated the pipe anyway.

Any tips for getting a stem bck into the shank

Open the pipe only when necessary, which is rarely if it is made right. Then replace the stem quickly. Graphite for tightness.

    Relights?

If you relight right away and then use a pipecleaner the drop in taste quality will be minimal. It comes from the moisture soaking into the unburnt tobacco instead of being vaporized by the heat.

    Confused!

For a push in stem get a Peterson meer. They have the best plumbing, but possibly not the best meerschaum.

    Becoming a codger?

Edgeworth is the only codger blend I have tried and I was 14 years old. Can a 14 year old be a codger?

    Blending with Cigar Leaf

Lane used to have a Cuban tobacco called Vuelta Abajo, Down in the Valley. It was cigar tobacco. I never liked it in a pipe. This was before the Cuban revolution.

    Fingernail Tamping

I formerly used the tip of my right index finger. It got a little burned and hardened and worked fine. Then, around 1957, I found out about tampers. Finger has recovered.

    All My Pipes Smoke Hot

Two strange suggestions which may or may not work: 1)drill holes in the bowl for cooling (smoke over metal pail or giant ashtray; 2) put some antennae on top of the bowl. Heat rises so they will draw the heat up and dissipate it.

Minimum pipes for a reasonable rotation

The formula is number of pipes smoked per day X 5 if you want a somewhat dried out pipe to smoke. If you want a really dry pipe make it X 14.

    Pipes And Sherlock Holmes

I saw the 7% Solution the other day. It was just as bad as when it was released in the 70s. What a stinker. Holmes was holding a calabash so clumsily it was clear that he was not a smoker. Robert Duval as Watson handled what looked like a Dunhill billiard with saddle bit more easily, but...

    What Are You Driving?

I got too old for a bike. Right now a Honda Cr-v. I don't love it because my hands slip off the vinyl covered steering wheel. Also it is just a little underpowered and too top heavy on the turns. Otherwise ok and dependable. If the town lets me build a garage I will get a better car. Not sure...

    All My Pipes Smoke Hot

I also tend to smoke too quickly. Blowing on the outside of the bowl cools it off.

Real Talk Request: Peterson Deluxe vs Artisan pipe?

Artisan pipes are of very variable quality. I stay away from them now unless they are from Lasse Skovgaard, my favorite maker. Petersons are slightly more predictable. They take a while to break in, but tend to be good smokes if you like a strong tobacco, especially a Lat mix, which covers most...

Good luck Monk. I have been under many times; always made it back, darn it. (Been dead. Life is more work. Death is a breeze.).
