    Disappointed with Match Balkan Sobranie

I don't know. I love BSOM Have yet another pound on the way. But I'm partial to that type of oriental leaf. I was a big fan of the McClelland Grand Orientals line and find them similar to those used in this match by Sutliff. For me the BSOM comes across very much like Skiff Mixture with a...

Enjoy Tobacco and Nicotine in Other Forms?

Well, not really if you sniff a bit here and there. The issue I find with snuff is that with heavy all day use, you'll end up reeking havok on your sinuses which in my case at least always seemed to lead to infections and horrible congestion. And at that point I couldn't smell or taste a thing...

Enjoy Tobacco and Nicotine in Other Forms?

OH, good to know. I'll try the Seville some day if I can find it.

Enjoy Tobacco and Nicotine in Other Forms?

Mostly pipes of late, but go through heavy cigar phases from time to time. Nasal snuff on rare occasions---still working on a large tin of Fribourg&Treyer Paris snuff from 2009. Amazed at how it's remained fresh after all these years. Shame that their line of snuff has been discontinued...

    Samuel Gawith Finally

I'm a Skiff nut too. It ages really well in the tin. Something new that I've tried this year that I like just as much and have been stocking up on is Sutliff Balkan Sobraine Original match. They're both on the medium side, but the BSOM has a lot more floral notes from the Oriental leaf. I like...

    Best Pipe Filters

Yeah, these filters definitely last much longer than the others. I'll use em a handful or more times and then soak em and brush em and keep using em. I get a dozen and half or more smokes out of each one. I just wish I liked the pipes better.

***What Are You Smoking, Sept. 2020?

Today, I put away bowls of Newminster Creamy peaches, Balkan Sobraine Original Match, Sutliff Old World, Sutliff Black Cordial and Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic. With so many aros today, my tongue needs a rest. That's what sleeping is for. Good night.

Best First English Blend for an Aromatic Smoker to Try

I get the bulk version of this, which is the Sutliff Balkan Sobraine Original Match, and it is out of this world. I've bought two pounds of it since trying it in March. Not sure if it is what you're looking for in an aromatic English though.

***What Are You Smoking, August 2020?***

I received a mail call over the weekend of 1 oz samples of mostly stuff I've never tried. Never having tried a Lane Limited Bulk in my life, I wasn't expecting much.... But LL-7 is a bell ringer. That subtle toasted marshmallow flavor and the copious amount of smoke this blend generates...

    Bye Bye Nat Sherman

I loved the Village throughout the 80s and into the 90s, but you're right. All the flavor of the place has been displaced. I still go and still enjoy it for what it is and what it once was, some of that vibe still lingers. But yeah, most of the bohemians moved into Brooklyn pretty much 20 years...

    Best Bargains?

CAO Italia, CAO Brazilia, CA Black. Ditto Oliva Master Blend 3. Olvia Saison. La Perla Habana White Pearl. None of these are a budget buster. For downright cheap cigars... I really don't mind the 5 Vegas Gold, they're good as are the 5 Vegas Triple A. I generally really like all Drew Estate...

    Best Pipe Filters

I use, Savinelli balsa 6mm filters and the Vauen 9mm charcoal filters too. I'm thinking of buying 9mm balsa filters for my 9mm pipes. I'm starting to appreciate the balsa filters more as time goes on. I have one Brigham pipe with rock filter and they're good too, just not a fan of the pipe I have.

***What Are You Smoking, August 2020?***

Just smoked some Stanwell Melange in a Nording Great Dane pipe---enjoying all things Danish today. BTW, Melange is now my favorite ARO. Can't believe how smooth it is. And tastes just like it smells.

Any Recommendations for a Struggling Ciggy Smoker?

Snus, specifically, is probably the safest way to quit smoking. I still keep a few tins of the good Swedish stuff in my freezer for plane rides and for those occasional hours I spend at the casino poker tables. You can totally get your fix w/out getting the stink eye from anybody when you pop a...

Any Recommendations for a Struggling Ciggy Smoker?

Hey man. Good luck. I was in your boat a dozen or so years ago. The pipe tobacco helped me cut back, but I couldn't kick the cigarettes completely. I tried patches, chantix, gum, pipes and cigars, snus and snuff. Sometimes in combination. LOL... I'm sure I was getting the nicotine I needed, in...

    Erinmore First Impression

Just bought my first tin a week ago and am really enjoying it in this summer heat. Tangy lemonade quality to me and I sometimes get a weird licorice or menthol flavor. Don't get the juicy fruit or pineapple at all. Maybe a note of unripe peach here and there. I find it somewhat similar to St...

    Tobacco Log Book

I have a notebook for keeping track of what I bought and where. I do make quick notes about a blend and give them a rough rating. I revisit blends and ratings after a few years to check on any changes after aging. I've always kept journals and notebooks going back decades. Takes a few minutes a...

    What are You Reading Now?

Don't sleep on his poetry. Love is a Dog From Hell is a great one. If you haven't yet, check out the movie Barfly staring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway, based on Bukowski's life. Then read Hollywood, Bukowski's novel based on the making of the movie based on his life. Can't make this shit...

Did You Like Burley From The Start?

I'm not sure HB is representative of Burley in general. I've had quite a few burleys and you nailed it as far as describing the flavor. HB was my favorite Burley when I first got into pipe smoking and not coincidentally I started pipe smoking to help quit smoking Marlboro cigarettes. HB hit the...

What Are You Listening To? (August 2020)

This weekend was listening to Talking Heads, Matthew Sweet, Devil Doll, Tom Waits and CSNY. Saturday was a good night for drinking on the deck with friends and listening to tunes.
