My New Lighter
Funny, I just looked at the bottom of mine, and I’ll be damned it looks like it is refillable. A small hole with a metal ring inside, for a one Canadian dollar store disposable lighter, 75 cents US. Lol. The ones I have are stamped with Major as the brand.- elvishrunes

Breaking in a New Pipe
Newer pipes have a bowl coating, I believe it is usually a wood ash paste. But even with older pipes I often just smoked until I discovered oil. Chipped Chamber Wall
Yes a carbon layer will certainly fix that. I tend to get tiny cracks in some of my pipes inner bowls and it is because I smoke a hot pipe and it shatters the briar. It doesn’t bother me, the carbon layer fixes it…- elvishrunes

Who Stirs His Tobacco Towards the End?
Nope, never even crossed my mind…. I just smoke and tamp until the bottom stuff is too stubborn to light easily, and then I’m out. Having said this in theory it sounds like a good idea, to loosen the backy with air. Worth a try!- elvishrunes

Alcohol Treatment
For less extreme cases, you can just dip a pipe cleaner in rubbing alcohol then clean the inside stem and shank, than right after run more dry cleaners to remove the excess alcohol and grudge will come out too... then dip paper towel in rubbing alcohol to clean inside the bowl, then a dry one...- elvishrunes

Acrylic Stem Slippery.
My newest and favourite pipe simply won’t clench on the right based on my teeth and pipe shape, it is acrylic but I don’t think that’s the reason. Other pipes are fine on the right. Luckily I’m a left clencher anyhow... I guess you just have a mis-fit like mine.- elvishrunes

It doesn’t hurt to try it RYO, at the end of the day it’s what u like. I started breaking up cigars putting them in a homemade pipe till I bought my first backy pouch... But as mentioned above there is a whole world of natural pipe tobacco.- elvishrunes
