    Draw the Flame Down?

Yes as mentioned above I draw the flame down deep into the bowl with just a normal lighter held on an angle precisely so it doesn’t scorch the rim!

Packing Density of Bowl - Should it be Uniform from Top to Bottom?

I never took packing that seriously until I came here. But over packing, over tamping, and too tight is generally bad as air flow creates better combustion. I either gravity fill the whole bowl or gravity fill and add a tight pinch plug up top,,,

    Light Tobacco with less Nicotine

Captain Black white, or any Captain Black or OTC pouch. High Cavendish, low nic, pretty tasty, a good start and probably available in most countries,

Moving From English Blends to Pure Virginias

Yeah as others have mentioned some are lighter than others…. I find Orlik actually a pretty strong full tobacco both in taste and nic….

    Why Peterson?

I only have one…. But I do like some of their shapes, and especially the orange stems. I bought this one I liked at an antique store for 10$ Canadian, 7 US, and when I got home was happily surprised to see it was stamped, Peterson made in the Republic of Ireland, Shamrock 808. Anyone have any...

    Cellaring Too Long?

yes I was referring the 1.75oz metal tins, not the Sutliff, C/D style ones. And I can smell all of them that I just sniffed including Orlik… however after smelling the bottom paper label like Gervais mentioned, I think that’s where it’s coming from…. My nose was playing tricks on me, one...

    Cellaring Too Long?

they are indeed sealed. if you smell the crack (yes I realize what I just said there) smell comes out, what can I say. Most normal tins do, even aros…. I have an unopened Mac Baren Vanilla flake here that has a nice smell to it, anyhow another poster answered my question above, as you didn’t😃

    Cellaring Too Long?

Given the irony of your name, I’ll ask…. I have some 4 year old tins of Peterson Old Dublin English, Latakia based. The tins still smell Smokey, but I think I’ll smoke them this summer and buy more. I only keep them as backup, not to age them. I wonder how long they’d still smell good and Smokey?

Pipes I'm married to (and pipes I'm not)

I’m married to all of my pipes and keep them all…. I have great antique store finds or gifts that have sentimental value and history when I got them, although I no longer smoke them. I only smoke my small/medium Neerup collection, because they are nicer looking, and I like them better. I...

Is this Plume, Mold, or Something Else?

It’s so small, I wouldn’t have noticed, maybe sugar crystals. Also , if it’s high levels of toxic mold it would smell bad, smell is a huge indicator with mold. If it was tiny amounts, they’d get burnt by the flame and you likely don’t inhale pipe tobacco anyhow. Fermentation (like with...

Latakia Will Be Smoked Till I'm Sick Of It

funny, I just had some Laphroaig tonight, I never tire of the peat although my wallet stops me from too much, but I did finally cut back the Lat last year.. I smoke more Va’s and aros now, and I do appreciate all scotch flavours tho.

Ran Into A Guy Smoking a Pipe

Some hipsters I’m sure smoke pipes, but i always think it’s going to blow up one day with them, like 1 in 3 start smoking, but not yet that I’ve seen. Most of the pipe smokers I’ve seen, about 10 in the last 10 years are middle aged or older gentlemen with aros and no name briars, not like...

    What are Your Hobbies?

    Question about light up.

I’m more looking for a thick puff, that tells me enough is burning, I don’t really pay attention to the ember…. But I’d say it’s about half the width of the tobacco it looks like.

    Hooked on Capt Black.

I was smoking with a codger and he gave me some CB white, I was surprised how much I liked it. It’s a bit low in nic, so I cut 50% with Virginia or a VaPer to up the potency and lower the artificial chemical levels some.

    My Beginner Sampler Selections

Yeah good choices covering every major category, better than the run of the mill OTC blends that most including me start with, and even many of the those are quite decent…

    Is Smoking a Universal Vice?

One man’s vice is another man’s virtue…. I think balance is key, pipe smoking to me has been a benefit especially over cigarettes, as “tobacco“ can take on many forms.

    Am I The Only One?

I do, but I don’t smoke every single day and all I do, is a paper towel in the bowl and a pipe cleaner in the stem…. 60 seconds and not that difficult or dramatic.

Had a Tin Lose its Seal

I definitely have tin anxiety, with US politics around smoking these days and a truly insane Canadian Prime Minister who has created trucking and transport issues at the border and airports, and supply chain issues worldwide, I’m certainly trying to build a bigger cellar… Maybe I’m wrong, but I...

    English blends

I make an English that smells really smoky and is surprising smooth: -1 oz or 1 part C/D dark fired Kentucky -1 oz or 1 part C/D Latakia -1 oz or 1 part Sutliff red Virginia -1 oz or 1 part Sutliff Crème Brulee or any vanilla aro All bulk items and really balanced with decent nic from the...
