🎄🌟 The Unofficial Official PM Secret Santa 2024 Thread 🌟 🎄

@mikethompson This morning I have done what is required to be done, in the manner of which we deem we are speaking, in respect of certain articles despatched to the nominated recipient known only to thee and me. Selah. Som Besths, and a happy Thanksgiving to all who are doing it.

    Food Affecting Tobacco?

In my experience, raw cacao certainly does. Chocolate as it is purveyed to us, rather less so.

    Food Affecting Tobacco?

Sake, to my mind, apart from complementing a Japanese meal, is a wonderful recreation in itself, like pipe smoking. So many variables, even with just one bottle - temperature, what you drink it out of, etc. Each sip from a single eggcup-sized chokko can differ subtly from the next, as the cup...

    Hi from Southampton UK.

How're you? and Shw mae? from the Welsh Marches.

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Splendid guns, those Weihrauchs - I have a .22 break-barrel W but don't compete with it. Just use it for shooting rats and squirrels.

What are You Drinking? November 2024

I could post you a pic of the mug I'm drinking it from, but there wouldn't be much point: it is Bishop (England's answer to Gluehwein, mentioned in Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'). You get a bottle of non-vintage ruby port and warm it up with half an orange that's been stuck with half a dozen...

An Ode to Samuel Gawith's '1792'—Apologies to Dr. Suess

    - Get in touch with a large-sized regiment (like Prince Rupert's) beforehand, and see if they'll be prepared to lend you some kit and take part by way of a taster. At least, that used to happen with the more well-heeled regiments in my day. And if you can, get a posting to the artillery: there...

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

Right on, @telescopes - there are fashions in morality, they come and go, and they're not truly ethically based, they're fads. But taken so, so seriously while they last.

    Happy Thanksgiving

An English Christmas is the usual traditional time for acts of violence over here, when the extended family reunites briefly at the table. Well, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Now Mrs. Badger and I have never celebrated Thanksgiving before, but recently befriended a visiting couple...

    What Defines a Codger?

I am reminded of the old 'Nature vs. Nurture' argument. Belief systems seem to run in families - politics, religion, etc. So does temperament. Do we think that any such - including codgerosity - gets hardwired into our DNA? It would explain a lot...

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Spent most of the day cutting and stacking logs for the stove, 'til it got too dark to see where the axe was going. Knocked off with some Charatan Black Flake in the Barling Meer, mixed with the last of the Cabbie's to liven it up a bit. It sort of worked a bit, but the Black Flake kept falling...

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

If you have a lawn tractor, you can chop up the leaves a bit first which will help them break down; and for every six-inch layer in a manageable pile you could spread either a bucket of fresh horseshit, or 9 ounces of of blood, fish and bonemeal, or 5 of sulphate of ammonia. Pissing on the piles...

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

My consolation (in the very long term) is in contemplating the "tick-tock" of History. Always there are puritan control freaks lobbying government, they try a prohibition, the black market provides a golden opportunity for organised crime, eventually government gives up and just levies taxes...

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

Just try thinking of the great potting compost and soil conditioner all those leaves will make in 2 years' time. That usually stops me from screaming, this time of year. Don't let it spoil your day, anyhow :-)

    ID on this Tyrolean Pipe

For cleaning the horn, I'd suggest lukewarm soapy water, and dry immediately but very gradually afterwards. You may then want to oil it. There's a thread here you may find useful: https://pipesmagazine.com/forums/threads/old-horn-stems-dos-and-donts.80184/ As for date and provenance, the...

    Food Affecting Tobacco?

I hadn't noticed anything I eat affecting the taste of what I smoke, but I will second what @sardonicus87 says about coffee and Burley blends. Some teas and some beers also seem to complement a smoke for me - but having said that, I'm strictly VA/Per/KY/Bur in my smoking preferences.

Update on the STG Closure Of Sutliff and Mac Baren

There is, however, Ersatzpfeifentabak - or as some prefer to call it, E-liquid sucked out of a vape. While most adult ex-smoking users I know seem to have entered a second childhood, displaying an irrational preference for flavours like Lemon Sherbet or Rhubarb and Custard or Strawberry...

***What Are You Smoking, Nov. 2024?***

I've rubbed and cut, and folded and stuffed, and I much prefer the latter, for that very reason :)
