Don’t Care For Latakia, But I Did Like FM OTT - What To Try?

Having smoked a pipe since the late 1960s I've tried & tried to become a fan of Latakia blends to no avail. I do enjoy some blends, however, where the Latakia is more condimental. Not counting the out-of-production MacBaren Vintage Syrian, House of Windsor Country Doctor, & McClelland Oriental...

    Packing jars too tightly?

For long-term storage, I usually put 2 oz. of pipe tobacco into half pint wide mouth Mason/Kerr jars. Over the years, I found 2 things that are really helpful for jarring my tobacco: A canning funnel: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ball-Jar-Canning-Funnel/24817228 And an Espresso Tamper...

In Praise of PS Luxury Navy Flake

In September 2005 I bought a pound of Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake from vegassmokes.com that had been vacuum sealed in 1997. I initially stored it in a sealed container until I finally cut open the plastic in September 2012. The flakes had basically fused together to form what I'd describe as a...

    Czech Pipes

I have a Jirsa Bent Dublin I picked up in Phoenix many years ago. It's a great smoker. Our family visited Prague in 2019 & when I stopped at the Stanislaw Cigar & Pipe shop there were lots of Jirsa pipes so I presume they're still available. IIRC they were mostly less than $100.

Latest version of Half & Half

Really enjoyed a pouch of Half & Half that I bought in 2015 & recently finished. I'm seeking opinions as to the how the most current version compares. I see that now it comes in 7 oz. cans instead of the old larger tubs. I've been reading as to how other old codger blends have changed in...

    Pipe Tobacco Heartbreak

As I reached for the jar I noticed this: With magnification it's fluffy, not crystal-like. I've used the contents as a blender for a long time, opening it infrequently. It's never even been obviously damp. It's been many years since I had mold in jarred tobacco & I remember it well - I...

Recommend a Fix for Varnish Wearing Off Bowl Rim

While I'm usually pretty careful to not burn the rim as I light my pipes, over time the varnish/finish wore off this Hilson Vintage Walnut Paneled Billiard. Anyone have an easy DIY fix? Top it? Strip the entire pipe? Any help appreciated!

Knowing When to Quit a Bowl

For me it's the same answer Lew Rothman used to give about when to stop smoking a cigar - when it stops tasting good.

    In Defense of Codger Blends

I have lots of favorite Codger Blends that I enjoy regularly - Captain Black Original (White), Gold, Copper, & Royal, Half and Half & Mixture No. 79. I keep a some other ones around for those times when I just need a change - especially Prince Albert & Carter Hall. I have tubs of Sugar...

    An Aromatic Mixer?

For me the aromatic that's great as a mixer - Sutliff Molto Dolce (and its bulk counterpart Crème Brûlée). Adds additional sweetness & ramps up the room note to any blend I find a bit boring on its own. Another one I've discovered lately - Sutliff Chocolate Mousse. Mixed it with some C&D...

Is there a general consensus on what blend a new piper should start on?

^^^ This The most common complaint I've heard from newer pipe smokers: "I can't keep it lit." Many of the codger blends were also made for roll-your-own cigarettes & tend to burn easily. Gravity fill some Carter Hall, Prince Albert, or Sir Walter Raleigh to the rim of the bowl. Press down on...

    MARXMAN Pipes, anyone?

Over the years I've picked up three Marxman Mel-O pipes - a Canadian, a Tomato/Squat Prince, & a Bulldog. They're not the best constructed pipes I have but I liked the shapes & they're all terrific smokers.
