1950s Short Film Re: Wilke Pipe Shop--Blending & Pipemaking

Love it. Thanks for sharing. A picture of America that is rapidly disappearing.

    Amazing Meerschaum Find and Restoration!

Very nice restoration job and a good find. The hole in the bottom was probably pecked with a sharp pipe pick or pointed knife. That can be a fairly common problem with pipe smokers who are too rough with their pipes, especially meerschaum (briar too). Did the repair man plug the hole with a...

Its All In The Stem...For Me

You might try contacting the MM factory or Grabow and see if you can buy some stems. Technically, they are not vulcanite - a hard rubber - but a softer cast plastic. Vulcanite comes cast in a variety of shapes or in rods. In rods it has to be machined and hand cut. They might be able to tell...

    Dad’s Meerschaum

Does the crack penetrate to the tobacco chamber? If not you might look at laying your hands on a block of meerschaum. I recently saw some blocks for sale on the internet, but don't remember where - maybe Ebay. Someone here may know. They are for carve your own pipe aficionados. I would create...

First Dunhill - Found in Some Random Pipes that Came with a Display My Wife Bought on Facebook

Air, Sunlight, sylvia/water, alcohol - all speed the oxidation of vulcanite, a hard rubber that has Sulfer in it. I recommend a visit to YouTube on restoring vulcanite bits, and pipes in general. I echo the many comments here on receiving a nice find!

    Water Flush Cleaning Technique

Well, I read further and got the picture. And I gave it a try on several pipes I recently smoked. I find it works well !! Its adept at taking the canaubu wax off the bowls, but that is easily buffed back on. Tried it with stem on and off. I didn't find any difference. When I clean my shanks...

    Water Flush Cleaning Technique

Maybe I missed it, but can you describe the technique. Hot or cold water? Do you inject it from. The stem end or bowl? Trying to get a picture of it in my head.

    General MacArthur's Pipe

I am attaching some pictures so you will know this wasn't some 'Side Show Bob's Emporium'. A lot of Marines died so you can be a cold cynic questioning every thing and everyone you want to in the freedom of your comfortable chair. Perhaps you had to be there where a stone from the flag raising...

    General MacArthur's Pipe

Yes. Gen. MacAuthur could of hung that Marine's ass out to dry. Instead, he showed grace. Furthermore, Marine Farum could have lied. Honor reigned.

    General MacArthur's Pipe

For the corncob smokers among us, including me. I was staying at the Marine Memorial Hotel in San Fancisco where I used their library, which was also a museum. Under glass was Gen. Mac's pipe and a great story with it. I thought it should be shared here. You should be able to expand the...

Birdseye vs. Sraight Grain & Break-in

That's great that you never had an issue with a lacquerd briar. Perhaps I should have written IMO. Lots of opinions here and always are with pipes which are a very personal item and part of the fun. Obviously lacquered briar are not my thing.

***What Are You Smoking, February 2021?***

I have a 1930s era Pioneer Meerschaum Bulldog in a fitted case with real amber bit that's pristine. I have other Meers, Paul Fisher, etc., that I smoke. It's an individual thing, but I'm glad I have some that are pristine.

Birdseye vs. Sraight Grain & Break-in

Very true. Yep, and what is prized in a cob? It's poracity and easy break-in. Same with Meerschaum. Much color comes from the interaction of the wax and exterior smoke, but with time color works its way through the mineral. Then too, we talk about ghosting in pipes. We all know what creates a...

Birdseye vs. Sraight Grain & Break-in

Yes White Oak is harder then Red. Yet, it still has fibers that carry sap, albeit not as open as Red or Briar. Are you so sure the Carbon cake isn't porous? Then why do we rest a pipe between smokes or give it time to dry? Food for thought.

Birdseye vs. Sraight Grain & Break-in

One of the reasons I raise the question is Red Oak, a hard, hardwood. If you put the end grain of dry seasoned Oak in a bowl of water and blow on the other end you will see air bubbles coming out. Now I know Briar is harder then Oak, but like it those fibers once carried sap. Fiber direction...
