Bron340 is spot on the money with his advice.

Research what you’ve got and have a professional restore them. You have some nice pipes there and it would be a shame to ruin them because you don’t have the professional skills to work on them.

Great find and I hope you enjoy them all. Well done to your wife!!!

Just away from the sun should be ok.
Depends on your tolerance for green. Mine is extremely low. It bugs the hell out of me to see any green at all. Even vulcanite stored in drawers aren't assured of not oxidizing. I wished someone had told me that when I started in the mid 2000s. I used to keep some of my herd on top, and the remainder behind the glass doors, of my China hutch. The ones on top went green the quickest. The ones behind glass doors, slower. But all the black vulcanites in my early collection, even the german ones, eventually needed restoration, some multiple times. The most oxidation resistant stem belong to a 4-number kaywoodie.

I'm about to sell a Gray I otherwise love because it has a stem junction where three planes meet at a peak right at the shank. That sharp junction is screwed if any attempt is made to remove oxidation there. It sucks, but that's the reality of vulcanite.

Definitely have a few high end pipes worth the wait to get them restored properly. The previous smoker valued those to have them in the case, and a couple of them caught my eye to still have retained high value.

Air, Sunlight, sylvia/water, alcohol - all speed the oxidation of vulcanite, a hard rubber that has Sulfer in it. I recommend a visit to YouTube on restoring vulcanite bits, and pipes in general. I echo the many comments here on receiving a nice find!

I cleaned up and took the Tanthorne Weber out for a drive last night. It smoked great. It wasn't one mentioned here so I was a little more comfortable doing a quick cleaning with everclear and some light scrubbing. I'm also having fun just researching these to see what they're all about.

There are some in this bunch that were this person's workhorses. I'm still thinking that several should be professionally restored, but I may research restoration and try it on the more used pipes. I found an article on soaking in OxyClean to remove the oxidation. Is this a safe way to bring the stems back to black?

I'm definitely not an expert but it's helped me clean up some oxidised stems. It wasn't a miracle cure all though. Just a step in the longer process for the bad ones.

I have a Sherlock Holmes cabinet like yours mounted on the wall in my office where its not exposed to direct sunlight. It's a great cabinet for straight pipes.

Personally, I would send the Dunhill's off to one of the professional pipe shops and have them cleaned and polished and the stems looking like new. I would suggest Georged if you don't mind spending the money. You have a couple of others that I would send off for cleaning also.
