I've never had an issue with lacquered pipes and the absorbency and breathing of a pipe were debunked on here some time ago.
That's great that you never had an issue with a lacquerd briar. Perhaps I should have written IMO. Lots of opinions here and always are with pipes which are a very personal item and part of the fun. Obviously lacquered briar are not my thing.

I have two NOS Stanwell Straight grains from the latest period of Stanwells Denmark era production, both of these were very tricky to break in, they were very prone to overheating issues, but this may be partly due to a fact I did remove thick inner bowl coating, now after when I have applied the chambers with new lighter carbon coatings and smoked multiple bowlfuls those overheating issues seem to be settling more or less

My problem with them is that air bubbles in the lacquer can sometimes cause blistering. An issue that is easily fixed with a heat gun and a tshirt, but still annoying.

Oh, there are issues with varnish and lacquer on pipes, but just not with cutting off "breathing" or drying. It must, logically, but not enough to make a whit of difference.
