    Two Nuns and a Seminarian

Obviously I am up to something involving the old stalwart, Three Nuns. For 30 years I’ve mostly smoked cherry aromatics and OTC blends and was (and still am) completely content. Recently I’ve been cleaning out the old family house where dad lived and came across cans of well over a dozen...

***What Are You Smoking, September 2024?***

Today I did a side-by-side comparison of Three Nuns and Newminster 403 Superior Round Slices. I smoked the Three Nuns in a Comfort churchwarden (front, I converted it to an opera pipe); and the Newminster in a Medico Double-Dri system pipe. This was my first time with either blend. Very nice!

***What Are You Smoking, September 2024?***

I enjoyed a leisurely Fall walk to the local lake with a bowl full of a self-mixed cherry aromatic. I've been testing the moisture holding capabilities of an old rubber-lined leather tobacco pouch. I loaded it up 18 days ago and the tobacco is still just perfect for smoking. I used a...

    Combining Blends?

I do combine blends frequently, but I'm a fan of aromatics with a soft spot for cherry blends (so take my comments from that perspective). Recently I smoked my way through a dozen OTC blends that my deceased father smoked during the '40s through the '70s. I took the remnants of the five that I...

    Hello from Western Australia

G'day from way up North! That's an amazing collection! It's a pity that tobacco costs so much there, I'd want to smoke all of them regularly. What are the little metal baskets below the Peterson packages in the second photo? Tea strainers?

My 3000th Post and 65th Anniversary

Congratulations on 3000 post, 65 years of pipe smoking, AND on having such a wonderful and understanding wife – you are indeed a lucky man. My paternal grandfather died at 94 and my dad guessed he smoked a pipe at least 80 of those years; you’ve got a good number of years left and hopefully...

Your Best Cheap Pipe; Here's Mine; Let's See Yours!

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread and seeing all of the “blue-collar” pipes out there. Here’s a before and after shot of my most recent acquisition, a 60 year old unsmoked Dr. Grabow from ebay. My version shows the fills a lot more, but I refinished it to look more like one my dad used to have...

***What Are You Smoking, September 2024?***

It was raining earlier today so I spent some time blending two of my favorite home-pressed cherry blends and loaded up my old Yorkshire billiard. Once the sun came out I was prepared for a nice walk around the local lake with the dog. The pipe lasted 90 minutes and tasted wonderful. Fall is...

    Hej from Stockholm!

Welcome to the web site, Marcus! It's always nice to have people joining in from the northern part of the planet. Whatever blends you eventually favor, smoking a pipe can enhance so many activities. We'll be interested to hear about the pipe scene in Sweden

Show Us Your Knife (And Pipe)

While this late 1970s Randall Alaskan Skinner has skinned a moose, it’s more often used to slice my pressed tobacco. The thick blade is hollow ground almost like a straight razor and is easy to keep scary sharp, perfect for slicing without crumbling the plugs. It’s not a fancy knife but it’s...

***What Are You Smoking, September 2024?***

I enjoyed a bowl of Sutliff’s match of the old codger blend, Troost today. It’s a mild caramelly aromatic which I enjoyed from the deck of the backyard tree house. I smoked it in my dad’s late 50s or early 60s Kaywoodie saddle bit pot (shape # 95B). It’s the beginning of Fall in Anchorage and a...

    Peterson 303 Clean Up

That was a great photo series, well done! The wood really is beautiful on that pipe, and it shows much better after the re-do. Great pipe and great job.

    Bought an Old LHS Sterncrest

It would be a shame for a cool old pipe to end its smoking life due to minor cosmetic issues. Your pipe would smoke just fine as is after a clean-up. I have one old Kaywoodie that has an almost identical hole my dad chewed in over 50 years ago - it smokes just fine, but I might try the melted...

    Pipes, Maturity & Flavours

It would be helpful if pipe-sellers included a chamber profile silhouette along with the chamber measurements. I wonder if the breaking-in period, which unquestionably makes a briar pipe smoke nicer, might also be a period in which we subconsciously learn to adapt to the pipe. I have one Zulu...

Welcome to an addictive but extremely friendly web site.

Show Us Your Most Prized Pipe!

Great topic! I don't have any expensive pipes, but those I own all have sentimental value to me. Without doubt, the three items below would be the first for me to grab in an emergency. The pipe (a 1950s Kaywoodie #33) was probably dad's favorite. The Zippo rode in his shirt pockets for 50...

    Fishing With Your Pipes

I smoked cigars while fishing, back when I smoked cigars. I usually have a loaded pipe tucked in some pocket these days when I'm out on the water, sometimes a flask as well. No better way to "rest a pool."

***What Are You Smoking, September 2024?***

Two pictures today: The first is a 1950s or 60s no-name second (probably from LHS or Wally Frank) from my dad, smoked with a combination of left overs stored in an equally old rubber lined tobacco pouch as an experiment to see how effectively it maintains the tobacco’s moisture level. Pretty...

***What Are You Smoking, August 2024?***

The main reason I started smoking pipes 30 years ago was because of the shorter smoking options available compared to the cigars I had been smoking. Surprisingly, these days I rarely load less than a full bowl. Today I decided to stop dumping out so much unsmoked tobacco when time runs short, so...

What is Your Lighter of Choice?

I only smoke outside so appreciate the windproof quality of Zippos, plus I inherited a bunch from my dad. The entire "collection" is on the top row. Anyone that happens to be in my pocket works to light a pipe, but if I know lighting pipes is in the schedule the four on the bottom row get the nod.
