I’ve always smoked cigars while fishing. I love the idea of having a pipe and fishing but I know I’ll drop it. Maybe I’ll try a cob that way if I lose it I won’t be heartbroken.
I designed this especially for fishing, great hanger,minimal hand need. Just call it my "fishing" pipe.
Well, I was a fly fisherman wearing waders and in the water carrying a rod and possibly a wading staff so that made it almost impossible when maneuvering around and with two hands needed to cast, strip and mend line a pipe was out of the question. Using flies getting gunk on the pipe was not the issue. I believe Boswell makes pipes with a lanyard specifically for fisherman and I know a few companies, which don't come to mind now made "fisherman" models.
casting lures for early spring lake trout, nothing that day. It’s pretty easy to shore fish just put your pipe down for a bit, boat fishing I’d never use a pipe. Ice fishing I primarily smoke cigars.

In a boat, sure, but I tried once while wading in a river. I promptly knocked the cob out of my mouth with a steelhead on while looking down and switching the rod from one to the other to grab my net hanging behind my neck. Yes, I landed the fish.
Style points were docked for that debacle. I did anticipate such a failure, however, and had packed another pipe for the streamside stroll back to my truck.

That's nice if you have the option. Here in Maryland, blue and flat head catfish (as well as northern snakehead) are considered invasive. One can get some pretty hefty fines for releasing them back into the water. And rightly so, in my own opinion. As the blue cats moved in, our native channel catfish numbers are dropping. If my dinner helps save two channel cat nests, it's worth it in my book.
I agree the smaller ones taste better. But I have teenagers I'm feeding. The big ones feed them better.
I smoked cigars while fishing, back when I smoked cigars. I usually have a loaded pipe tucked in some pocket these days when I'm out on the water, sometimes a flask as well. No better way to "rest a pool."

I love to fly fish in my local rivers and i tie my own flies, too. They are all fly only, so I avoid the stinky hands associated with cutting up baits. These things don’t stink
Man I miss tying flies! Used to tie them for bass and panfish for pond fishing - great way to get in touch with the sport while watching football and basketball in the winter months. Even ordered the materials and made a couple of darn nice fly rods, one fiberglas and one graphite - something special about catching fish with those back in the day.I love to fly fish in my local rivers and i tie my own flies, too. I'm all for taking fish for food. There's proof that local people catching dinner don't hurt the populations of any fish.
Unfortunately they've been saying our fish aren't fit to eat for a while, too much mercury they say... That's pretty bad because some of our people eat them a few times a week as a means of saving on groceries. I don't really like eating lake fish enough to risk it.
I've heard that the blues are seen as villians up in your neck of the woods. I've heard that they hurt the blue crabs too.
Blue cats aren't native to our river either, some say they hurt the bass by eating all the shad... But some say they help by eating small bass. I don't know what to think of all that, but I know I'm glad to have the chance to go after 'em.

I've always thought it would be a blast to get on a bream bed with a fly rod.
I pretty much just fish in the fall nowadays. The spots I go to require 30+ minute walk in, so I'll smoke a pipe on the way in, and another after lunch.
This Peterson Short was mighty useful last fall.

Yes I do! It’s a crazy thing when you hook up in fast/deep water with a pipe going. I tend to swim a bit more than the average angler.
Nothing much any more. If anything my buddy and go out with pipes and cigars and drown nightcralwers in the river. Use to do a lot of Bass fishing though. I know next to nothing about fly rods but I did catch a five pound carp on one, what a blast. Looks and sounds like we have some top notch anglers on the forum though! Thanks for the photos.
