    NUMBERS on pipes

Here's an example of numbering on pipes. This is a few years old but you will get the idea. Dunhill is the king of nomenclature on pipes. I'm sure you will want to memorize this...

    Latakia

Another thought: The pipe you smoke latakia in makes a HUGE difference. I myself feel you will get the best result from a high grade Italian like Castello, Ser Jacopo, Mastro, Caminetto, etc. Unfortunately I don't think Savinellis do a very good job with latakia... probably because of the way...

    Latakia

Personal opinion: Try Dunhill's Standard Mixture (not the MILD). It's a good introduction to latakia blends. I think it smokes much smoother than many other English blends and has a great flavor. Good luck.

    DOTTLE!

Over the years I've noticed that some "sophisticated" pipe smokers take a real pride in being able to burn every speck of tobacco and leave only ash. That's fine if you want to, I'm not so hung up on this. Some blends, especailly aromatics, can produce a lot of "goo" and this can build up in...

    Bowl diameters

For some reason .75" seems to give the best results with most tobacco. I don't know myself, but some people feel a slightly smaller bowl is good for straight Virginias. As to height a slightly taller bowl can be good sepecially for the new smoker. It you fill it only three quarters full then...

    Boycott List

Cornell & Diehl: Yeah, I know, many of you think these guys are great and they do advertise here... When I owned a shop I had 5 lb. bags of their stuff go mouldy within a month and they would not replace it. Never happened with any other blend. I ate the loss stoically and continued to sell...

    Throwing away Tobacco

Take two blends you don't really care for, mix them together, and sometimes you get something you like. It's better than tossing it...

The Joke Thread: Not Safe For Work (NSFW)

A sadist and a masocist met on the street. The masocist said "Hit me.", the sadist said "I won't".

What tobacco would you like to try that you have not got right now?

There are a couple of blends that I used to enjoy but can't get any more. Balkan Sobranie used to make a blend with cigar leaf that was very good with a nice fruity flavor and smooth as silk. And Sail, yellow packet. Yeah, I know, you can still buy it, but it is nothing like it was 40 years...

Favorite place to enjoy a nice bowl

Most of my smoking is in my "office" which is a room at home. It has a seperate a/c and heat system so no (or very little) smoke gets into the rest of the house. That's where I am right now. Also, I find it difficult to drive any distance without a pipe in my mouth.

    Different pipes for different smokes

I keep mine seperated also. Some for English only and others for the rest. I find that my Castellos, Jacopos, Mastros, etc smoke english extremely well and I use my Savinellis, meerschaums and a few others for my Raleigh and occationally other blends. It's really the best way to go...

    A Great Laugh

"A wink from a pretty girl at a party results rarely in climax, Karl. But a man is a fool not to push a suggestion as far as it will go." Col. Max Radl, "The Eagle Has Landed" 1976

    Mason Jar Savings

Plastic peanut butter jars work great for storage (best if washed first). I have one out in my work shop which is not heated or cooled when I'm not there. All summer it bakes in the heat and all winter it's in the dry, cold air. But, when I open the jar the tobacco is fresh and nice... On...

How much tobacco do you buy?

I have so much English around here that I seldom buy any. My "daily" smoke, Raleigh, is another matter. I buy 12, 14oz. cans at a time by mial order.
