    Briar Quality in Dunhill

I think I was sort of joking about which saw mill each came from and I doubt that I will get it. The left one (the nicest prime cut one) possibly a 'Super block' from Mimmo? The middle one from Jaume Hom and the one on the right from Manno

    Briar Quality in Dunhill

I'll play! The block on the right hand side has quite wide grain although, sometimes this wide grain can be depicted as 'angel hair' which, if stained and finished well, can look quite nice. This type of block can sometimes be pretty clean when cutting it i.e. not many flaws coming up. The...

    Briar Quality in Dunhill

Hi mso489 blocks come at a more or less standard price. There are some batches that are ok and some that are beautiful. Extra Extra (that's the quality)Large Plateaux costs between $40 -80 per block. I usually by the biggest blocks, not to make big pipes, to have 'enough room' to find the grain...

    Briar Quality in Dunhill

Hi psperrytops. Historically, We (James Upshall) bought plateaux briar from the Arta Company, Arta, Greece and Achaiki, Patras, Greece. The sizes that we bought were Extra Extra quality Large plateaux, Extra Extra PLSLL (Large Large PLS) PLSL (Large PLS). PLS which is the smallest plateaux...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

What a very, very unusual Upshall. I think that this is the only 'double beaded' pipe that we made up until 1989. I think that, whilst the James Upshall name has been engraved on the shank, it looks like the JU logo on the mouthpiece has been hand-pressed with the JU stamp - is that correct? If...

    Sharing My Excitement!

Is This a Lane Era Charatan?

The Lane logo was only stamped on the shanks of pipes shipped to the U.S. I am sure that there are many Charatan pipes in the U.S. which were bought in London stores or the Charatan shop in Jermyn Street in the 1960-1970s as the cost of them in England was about half the price. These would not...

    Sharing My Excitement!

Hi thomasw the Joura pipe in this photo was lent to me by a pipe collecting friend to use as a benchmark for quality and finish. I love this Joura finish and stains/colours applied to these pipes will really bring out the grain still further. These samples that I have come up with have not yet...

    Sharing My Excitement!

These are the ones that are now ready for staining, touching up, mouthpiece re-working, bending, where appropriate, more mouthpiece-work after bending, final sanding of the tobacco chamber, stamping, polishing etc. etc. They have all arrived at this stage, and no further, because I am still...

1899 BBB ? Help With Hallmark

1903-1904 The 'Own Make' indicates that the briar was turned in England rather than an imported bowl from France.

    1976 Dunhill Stamp Question

Yes bluegrassbrian, I think it was simply in stock for 7 years. Dunhill did carry quite a large stock of finished pipes at times and with the purchase of Charatan in Mansell Street and The Grosvenor Pipe Co (Ben Wade) in Georgiana Street, they had a lot on their plate in 1976 and onwards.

    Sharing My Excitement!

I agree and 'this time around' I want to make some super classical shapes in Dunhill group 4 and some group 3s too. The general demand in the 1970s and 80s was "Big, Big even Bigger". Today I am not under so much pressure to make what the markets want, rather to cut and make what I like.

    Sharing My Excitement!

I learnt a big lesson yesterday, I tried out the stamps I ordered last year (after considerable difficulties in communication) and realise that they are no good for the job as they do not have enough depth or sharpness. Originally, I offered to send them a sample so they could see the type of...

Here are two of the ones from the previous photo which are 'on their way' - still lots to do before they are finally finished.

    Sharing My Excitement!

As it was warm, dry and sunny yesterday, I used my circular saw (outside on my decking) to cut five more blocks of plateaux and to 'trim-off' these three bowls (the black marks are only burn marks from my saw blade). These are now ready for shaping. I think my confidence is up for taking on the...

    Sharing My Excitement!

These are 3 of the first turned blocks - for various reasons, they are not from the original clutch of cut blocks posted here 8 weeks ago. I have finished my first two pipes, not yet stained or stamped. :-)

    Dunhill White Spot Drama

Brilliant, nice one George! To me,that looks like a 1920s original Dunhill mouthpiece and I often thought how difficult it would have been to turn/produce spaghetti-type rods in genuine ivory I thought it may have been an ivory Catalin as used on Charatan 'After Hours' Pipes, (phenol...

James Upshall Pipes - A Discussion

This is, in my opinion, a very early piece - I would say 1979 - 1980. I think the stamp mark has been 'pressed into the shank by hand'. This was before we got the stamping machine from Sasieni in 1980-81. The machine would press them with more pressure, making the stamp deeper. The finish looks...
