Just to be able to watch the Master at work....this is truly what we pipesters live for. It is an honor to see Mr. Barnes's work.

It's great to see so many well grained well shaped pipes all laying together. They look great Ken! Don't be intimidated by the home stretch. You're going to do a great job of finishing this group of pipes. We're all in you corner!

Holy pipe socks! Love those shapes, especially the dublins... they have a healthy bit on them :puffy: I'll be interested to see what you decide for the final stains. I like the light stains on them now!

Hi thomasw the Joura pipe in this photo was lent to me by a pipe collecting friend to use as a benchmark for quality and finish. I love this Joura finish and stains/colours applied to these pipes will really bring out the grain still further. These samples that I have come up with have not yet matched the Joura finish, but I am determined to 'get it' in the next week or so. If you look closely at the photo of the pipes I posted, you can see some with paler briar and others are slightly darker. The briar of the lighter ones comes from Tuscany and is softer to cut and lighter in weight. I personally prefer this quality of briar, lovely to work with, generally cleaner briar and more porous. These in particular need some stain to really make the grain 'pop'.

Spectacular grain popping stain, Ken. It is such a visual paradox that to make darkish grain pop, one would emphasize it by a light stain. Such is the game with negative and positive patterns. Beautiful so far, it reminds me a bit of the Cavicchi stains. I mean that as a high compliment.

Astounding work and some gorgeous briar! I'm very impressed that you've been able to resume pipemaking at such a high level after a lengthy time away from the craft, Ken. I find it interesting, too, that rather than making one pipe at a time, you've chosen to make several, moving them through each stage together. I wouldn't have that kind of patience and discipline. Can't wait to see the finished result!

I find it interesting, too, that rather than making one pipe at a time start-to-finish, you've chosen to make several, moving them through each stage together. That requires more patience, discipline, and confidence than I possess. (Reasons #9-11 why I am not a world famous pipe maker.) Can't wait to see the finished results!

Just wait until you see what he made today. It will blow your socks off! I'm sure there will be pictures of it here in a day or two.
