What Music Are You Listening To ~ March 2019

Tool: 10,000 Days on CD. So are my neighbors, still. This is what happens when the wife goes away for any length of time and I'm left to my own accord 8O

Any Guitar Players Amongst Us? I'd Like Your Opinion.

This. I've been playing over 30 years. My experience is to buy a good used instrument that will not limit you in any way, and will hold or appreciate its value in the event you cease playing. Investing in a good instrument is also investing in yourself. Have one of your sons help you, play...

Update: Timing of Removal of Tobacco Blends Introduced After February 2007

Small batch, fair trade, free range imported fertilizer?

Alright, Serious Question of The Day: How Do You Like Your Eggs?

Over easy cooked in the cast iron skillet with a good dab of bacon fat. Dash of cajun seasoning on top usually, then severed with toast and bacon. If I'm feeling fancy, then scrambled with two extra yolks and heavy cream, some fresh chives and finely shredded cheese. Gently tossed in the iron...

    Lakeland

I don't get soapy from Grousmoore or any of the Sam Gawith I've tried to date. I did get a whopping mouthful of soap yuck from G&H Bright CR Flake. See below for a photo of me smoking it:

    OTC

I actually enjoy the taste of SWR aro, some of the Captain Black, HGL, and other Sutliff offerings. Unfortunately, my mouth gets very sore and tacky feeling after I smoke anything with heavy amounts of PG. I keep a tub of SWR regular in homage to my grandfather, it's ejoyable every so often...

Bite From Latakia and/or Oriental/Turkish Blends?

For some reason any ribbon cut does that to me unless it's dried to a crisp (left out for hours first), and then they are rather quick burning bowls. Flakes, coins, and broken flakes are much more forgiving to my tongue and mouth.

Smoking Tobacco for Rolling Cigarettes in Briar Pipes

Nobody mentioned yet, that several of the beloved Germain blends (Sobraine, Esoterica Pembroke and others) have this same fine shag cut. Just dry it out a bit and be ready to smoke a few bowls in a row.

    Bumper Stickers Of Wisdom

Note quite bumper sticker, but here in my little college town we get a lot of students from out of state. One particular young lady, I can only assume from Kentucky, had a personalized license plate on her car that read: KY GIRL

Which Is the Strongest Type of Tobacco Nicotine-Wise?

I bought a tin of Sam Gawith brown rope once. Upon popping the top, it looked like something my dog left for me in the yard. While it tasted very good (the tobacco rope that is), by the time I established a good light and cadence my head was spinning and I had to put the pipe down. Way more...

Samuel Gawith Black Forest Tin Rust from P&C

It has always happened to me on steel tins that are over 2 years old, especially the moister SG and similar brands. Never happened with McClelland, but those were food grade lined aluminum. Unless you're interested in resale at some point in the future, my recommendation is to open and jar it...

    Conniston Cut Plug

I never knew soapy until I bought some Bright CR Flake. The first 5 minutes or so was pure soap - like cup wasn't rinsed and I just drank dish water soapiness. After the soap burned off the rest of the bowl was very enjoyable. That was my first (and last) G&H tobacco. Odd thing is, I didn't...

Pipe Water Torture - Winter Vortex Edition

This thread was a great read, thanks Tim! I converted to water cleaning a few months ago. My pipes have no sour tastes, never need the monthly salt soak overnight (which now seems so ludicrous), cake develops very slow, and best of all: whisky is only for drinking now

    Mold or Plume?

I would classify that as plume and smoke it. Is it actually some kind of fungus? Probably, based on growth patterns (seems to be along the cut edges and indentations), but not all fungus is necessarily bad (blue cheese for instance). Years ago when I kept and smoked cigars, I had a few well...

    Bulk vs Tin ?

I love quality bulk, and jarring them is as simple as grabbing a flat of canning jars at the supermarket. We do a decent amount of home canning, so I have those on hand (in the actual basement to be exact).

Brick and Mortar Tobacco Store Pondering

Back on topic, whenever I rode through North Carolina I would make an effort to stop at the JR Cigars store in search of pipe tobacco. I recall buying lots of Sam Gawith and Rattray's for ungodly low prices (circa 2006) and also buying pounds of MacBaren VA#1 in bulk. I'm fortunate that my...

Brick and Mortar Tobacco Store Pondering

Wasn't the push for outlawing the cultivation of hemp (and by default weed) driven by the cotton industry in the early 1900s?
