HH Pure Virginia or Patriot Flake?

That's great feedback. I am always always smoking Virginia... I rotate between Union Square, FVF, Carolina Red Flake, Peterson Flake and the Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia. I don't really *need* more, but I like trying new tins and building stores to age. Never know when a new variety might...

HH Pure Virginia or Patriot Flake?

Thanks for the ideas. Right now I have my SG tins placed inside a few containers that claim to be airtight, they are plastic containers like you might find in a kitchen pantry. I'm going to keep a close eye on them for now and if seals seem to be deteriorating I'll jar. I like to keep tobacco...

    Favorite GLP

I have the most tins of Union Square and Telegraph Hill, but you will also find Quiet Nights and Gaslight on my shelf for an occasional. I haven't tried Chelsea Morning, but I'm burning through a supply of Squadron Leader at the moment and notice the rave reviews on Chelsea, perhaps I'll get...

HH Pure Virginia or Patriot Flake?

How does HH Pure Virginia compare to Union Square or Full Virginia Flake? I'm looking for a first-place pure Virginia for me to stock up and age - one that is not a red virginia as I have red virginia covered. I like Union Square for this. FVF is certainly top notch, but I'd prefer something...

How Often does Your Favorite Tobacco Change?

When I started with the pipe I picked up some of everything, restocking what I liked best with more tins of the same. Presently, tins of Carolina Red Flake, Peterson Flake, Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia, SPC Hogshead, Squadron Leader, and Full Virginia Flake comprise about 90% of my store...

Certain Tobaccos are a Hard Find

I have been building a store up which will contain a few years' worth of tobacco so I needn't worry about stockout. I've found several virginias that I like and I keep them all 8-10 tins deep just in case. I plan to stop building up once I am smoking only 3-5 year old tins, since I like...

    Carolina Red Flake Is Yucky

Love the stuff... sad I only have a dozen tins or so :)

    Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame?

That list was very helpful to me, in trying things in different genres. A sampler of those blends should help you head in the direction of something you like.

Just Dumped A Jar Due To Mold.

I haven't found mold yet, but I think if I did I'd throw the whole jar out and sterilize the jar. If any of you have an Instant Pot, they can sterilize jars in just a few minutes. (so long as the jar fits inside I suppose.)

How Often Do You Rub Out Flakes.

I have not had any luck with fold and stuff yet. For me at this point it has only led to tons of relights. But I can't say how much drying time I use because I haven't figured it out yet either! :) Sometimes I dry it for an hour, sometimes not at all, and I seem to get random results. I...

Who Are The Real Tobacco Snobs?

I have the wild idea people should just enjoy the hobby in whatever way they desire, listen to the opinions of others if they want to, and ignore them if they want to. I also feel that collecting rare and interesting tins as well as collecting and aging common ones is a valid way to enjoy our...

    Why Peterson?

My first decent pipe was a Peterson and I've seen no need to stray. They've done me right at every turn.

Am I Turning into a Codger?

I thought you were going to tell us you'd become hooked on Granger. Turns out you are developing the codger attitude instead! rotf Thank you and everyone else in this thread who served!

What Would You Do? Last Bowl...

I'd just enjoy it and then let it go. Many things in life are destined to become fond memories. That is the way of things. (I say this as someone who's got one FMC tin he can't bring himself to open yet)

    They Sent Aged Tin

Nice find! I seem to always get very fresh stuff when I order by mail, but I suppose that going through the big boys will probably result in that. I did find a 4 year old tin at the local tobacconist once, but I didn't care for that blend. Too bad.

Looking for a Work Horse Pipe

I would consider the Aron’s to be a workhorse pipe. A smaller bent pipe would be my choice for clenching while I’m out doing things.

    The dreaded demise.......

I worry if I have overdone it as I’m a 1-2 bowls per week guy most of the time, and now have enough tins stored to last me at least 5 years and I have more in jars. The 8-10 pounds of tobacco I own right now will carry me a long way. (Then again I’m only 40, so it’s not a lifetime supply...

Can Constant Relights Cause Premature Bowl Charring?

it seems like only the burley heavy blends will burn unattended for me. The rest require some relights, some need a fair number of relights. The folks here impressed on me that some relights are pretty normal but drying time will help but not eliminate them with certain blends
