    Is this mold?

I opened a new pouch of St. Bruno tonight, the ready rubbed version that comes in the OTC pouch. I've never had St. Bruno before, but I noticed right away that some of the tobacco has a whitish coating on the outside of it. See the photos: Since I've never had this blend before I don't know if...

    Jim's GLP Bankside Review.

Jim, I would also share my thanks with you for your quality reviews. They have been invaluable to me in narrowing down what to choose out of broad categories, or determining what the differences between similar sounding products might be. I’ve mainly stuck with popular blends that you have given...

The Lost Pipe Shops of London (video)

Well, I’m a millennial but I’m not exactly sure what caused me to consider picking up a pipe. The draw for me is just the same as what might draw a person my age to wines, or cigars, or fancy coffee or being a “foodie”. Unfortunately there’s some societal bias against tobacco because of...

Thanks! I suppose the only way to keep the hobby alive is to share it with those younger.

Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake 2022 at P&C

Glad to hear you got yours! I was afraid it was some kind of glitch but I was willing to chance it.

Cornell & Diehl Carolina Red Flake 2022 at P&C

Thank you! This is my favorite and I thought it had been sold out for the year.

    Peterson's Elizabethan Blend?

Some of the reviewers think the quality of Elizabethan is not what it was, but that the Sutliff match (Victorian) is still good.

Who Buys Tins to Age Ten Years or More?

I totally agree, and I’ve had experiences where I loved a blend at the first light and still do, and some where a blend that had me ordering more after one bowl was no longer holding my interest after that first tin. I think I’ll perhaps buy two tins of something and if I finish both and still...

Who Buys Tins to Age Ten Years or More?

I haven’t aimed to build a cellar until recently, but as I’ve found a few core Virginias are my favorites and as I’ve seen them go in and out of stock at times, I wanted to maintain a little inventory. At my current pace I think many of those tins of favorites like Carolina Red Flake, Union...

Cellaring: How Much is Too Much?

It would be fun to have a traveling box, where someone starts it with 5 or 10 random tins, and it gets passed around perpetually with everyone receiving it taking one tin from the box and putting in another of their own, then sending to the next person.

Cellaring: How Much is Too Much?

I am a 2 bowls a week piper on average, so I think I have enough tobacco in tins to last me about 10 years, if I bought nothing further. But that's almost all tins of Virginias that I am going to leave alone and put age on. I also have a few bulk purchases in mason jars that adds up to several...

    Re-thinking Wistfulness for Tobacco Exclusivity

I predict this thread will be locked soon so I will just say, interesting discussion on our reasons for choosing the things we do for our pipes!

Too Large to Smoke in Public

That thing looks like it belongs hanging on the store’s sign and not actually being smoked!

    Re-thinking Wistfulness for Tobacco Exclusivity

Following on to what’s been said, I didn’t appreciate burleys at the start. I know that’s where most pipers begin but I tended to avoid them because I don’t appreciate the room note very much, and because they seem to be the staple of lower quality blends that I don’t like. But there are some...

    Re-thinking Wistfulness for Tobacco Exclusivity

I’m a lot like you in these respects. I’m learning the value of a few trusted blends and getting to know them extremely well. I’ve tried dozens but stick to two or three now. I used to own 10 or more guitars and basses but have only two of those now too.

Chasing an Experience, Am I Just New?

You’re welcome. I haven’t yet decided what to do with those PPSR tins, I may cellar them or trade them off. I am definitely slotting in as a Virginia man so far. I think that Gold Standard list has many of the iconic choices on it. Choosing one from each category to try out would give you an...

    Opinion on Peterson System Pipe

Would one of Peterson’s calabash shapes be a good clencher? I’ve been wrestling with this myself, wanting a good clencher with a large bowl for reading. But I have issues with moisture often times with bent pipes.

Chasing an Experience, Am I Just New?

I have found my first impressions to not be a reliable indicator of how I will feel about a blend after 5 or so bowls, and less so after a whole tin. For example I read the rave reviews of Plum Pudding SR and bought a tin. I loved it at first so I bought several more tins on my next order, but...
