    Dear Gawith & Hoggarth

Capitalism has given us nearly all the blessings of comfortable modern life that we enjoy today. It raised the great buildings of our cities, created the jobs we work, invented most of the things we touch and use and buy in a day. Prosperity is priceless. It raises everyone's standard of living...

    Dear Gawith & Hoggarth

Yes, I appreciate their effort to say 'no more than 5 tins per day' or what have you. It would be better if they said it is "5 Gawith tins or one box per month" for each account. Even if you have 5 bowls a day and you only smoke one GH tobacco, that's more than enough. Any more than this and...

    Dear Gawith & Hoggarth

I found the other thread, and I feel it wasn't as bad as billed. It was basically 2 people trying to drag GH through the mud and doing it unsuccessfully. I love the company, and I love buying from a small outfit making high quality stuff uncompromisingly. I love the idea of supporting these 30...

    Dear Gawith & Hoggarth

I missed the recent controversy. I wish their tins were readily available but there are realities on their side with production and unfortunately they can't control people hoarding them. Above all I appreciate that they are here and provide real answers, and I don't blame them for having a go...

    Jim's C&D Carolina Red Flake 2022 Review.

Very glad to hear CRF will be returning!

    A Virginia to replace 5100

I have seen people compare the Sutliff Crumble Kake Red Virginia to 5100, although I never tried 5100 myself.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2023?***

No photo as I’m on my dark front porch enjoying a cool evening, but I’m having my first bowl of Bengal Slices. It’s interesting and has an odd licorice or menthol like thing hovering around it. Not blowing my doors off, but it’s a cool and slow burn that has enough flavor to let you know it’s...

In Stock Alert: Samuel Gawith Brown Sugar Flake

I got all excited at first thinking this was Best Brown Flake

Have You Noticed A Slow Down In Sales/Trading?

Some people like me who might otherwise put a toe in the estate market see entry level prices of $300 or more for nothing-special Dunhills and remain on the sidelines.

    Three Nuns

The reviews of Three Nuns are universally that the modern product is greatly inferior to the historical product. IIRC ownership of the brand had changed hands numerous times and it was changed for the worse somewhere along the way. Has something changed again?

    Early Morning Pipe or Nightcap?

They are opposite ends of the spectrum, so it all depends. Are you about to do some yard work or do you want something to tuck you into bed? ;)

    Have Any Blends Gotten Better?

Carolina Red Flake has been different in sugar content each year, and the most recent year it was noticeably higher than previous. Glad I stocked up since I haven't seen it anywhere in 2023 yet.

Best Tobacco to Break in a New Pipe ?

I keep aromatics, virginias, and english tobaccos to their own pipes. I would just start a new one out using whatever it's destined to be for.

    C & D Perique - Funky!

I have opened perique-heavy tins and thought I smelled a cow pasture nearby or somesuch. Sometimes plummy, sometimes just pungent.

Flight to Japan-- Pipes & Tobacco O.K.?

Most countries have limits on the amount of tobacco you can bring in with you but I've never seen any discussion of pipes themselves. One should bear in mind that nothing like a lighter or a match will be permitted in the cabin on a flight, though. Those items would have to be in a checked bag.

    Jim's C&D Carolina Red Flake 2022 Review.

Does this mean no more CRF without perique? That would sure be a shame.

Is Pipe Smoking Fading Into History?

I agree with that. Most people do the things they do because they need something emotionally and that need isn't met in their life. Love, attention, significance. But if they learn the beauty of simplicity and treading the old paths in the process, so much the better.

Is Pipe Smoking Fading Into History?

Thanks for the tips. I do enjoy the LP medium when I want to long play something (hah) in the sense of listening to the whole album, and I like that many used records are available quite cheap. I've got a decent collection of old jazz and classical albums now, and that's the type of music I can...

Is Pipe Smoking Fading Into History?

I like the fact that vinyl has made a comeback and I have purchased some in recent years, but it does at times remind me why the medium was left in the past. Records that skip from the store, their fragility, the need for large spaces to store them, the in ability to 'seek' as you can with...

Is Pipe Smoking Fading Into History?

I believe I read that cigarette smoking has declined to only 1 in 10 people in the United States, with incidence in the youngest demographics being even lower. This is half of what it was only 20 or so years ago. And there are probably 100 cigarette smokers for every pipe smoker. Sure, some of...
